May 6, 200916 yr So, nobody else brought this up!? Just chillin with my Pacifico and getting ready to eat some enchiladas. Anybody else celebrating?
May 6, 200916 yr Feliz Cindo de Mayo. I am on my 3rd margarita, and we had steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas for dinner. Good stuff.
May 6, 200916 yr The secret to an awesome margarita is Jose Cuervo Gold Tequila and Grand Margiere (instead of triple sec), and real life juice. I even zest the limes and put in there.
May 6, 200916 yr Author Tacos count. There was some cinco de mayo celebration downtown this weekend, it looked, um, interesting.
May 6, 200916 yr Cinco de Mayo macht Spaß! *puts on detective hat* OK I know macht is make and I'm pretty sure spass is fun. I'm going to go out on a limb and say German is like French where they use the word 'make' when we would use the word 'is'... so... "Cinco de Mayo is fun"? In German? Why?
May 6, 200916 yr No. Went to a pasta buffet for lunch. Hope you all realize it's NOT Mexican Independence Day. It's the commemoration of an important battle in Mexican history, though.
May 6, 200916 yr I was going to go to happy hour yesterday afternoon at a popular Mexican place near work, but it was packed..too crowded, didn't want to wait, so I went down the road to an excellent Cuban place instead. Had some tapas-- empanadas, fried plantains, a mojito, some flan, and a Cuban expresso. Tasty.
May 6, 200916 yr It's actually a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla. More of a celebration here in the states than it is in Mexico. I didn't even celebrate and I'm part Mexican. Could be because it's finals week though
May 6, 200916 yr You mean it's not like St. Patrick's day? Here in the US it is kinda like St. Patty's. A big celebration just for the sake of Mexican heritage, but it isn't even an actual holiday in Mexico...
May 6, 200916 yr Feliz Cinco de Mayo. Feliz 25 de Abril a voce. You guys commemorate that, right? And Santo Antonio (Jun. 13), too?
May 6, 200916 yr Feliz 25 de Abril a voce. You guys commemorate that, right? And Santo Antonio (Jun. 13), too? Thanks! April 25th is the day a military coup ended a dictatorship, and Santo Antonio is Lisbon's patron saint.
May 6, 200916 yr Author Not as catchy at Cinco De Mayo! I don't know why we celebrate it, I guess cause the supermarkets have all the mexican stuff on sale. Beer, salsa, tortillas, pork butt.
May 6, 200916 yr April 25th is the day a military coup ended a dictatorship, and Santo Antonio is Lisbon's patron saint. I remember! That event caused the bridge over the harbor to be renamed and Lisbon parties on Santo Antonio's day and couples who wish to marry get their marriage license fees waived on that day...that's what I remember reading! I would have gone to a couple of good Mexican restaurants near where I work but I've got a really bland taste palate, so the pico de gallo would have caused my stomach to churn all afternoon.
