December 10, 200520 yr For Release: DECEMBER 9, 2005 Detroit - General Motors has announced today, December 9, that it will acquire Northwest Airlines. GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner confirmed the purchase plans. Wagoner states: "We are very excited with the prospect of this new alliance." When pressed, Wagoner indicated that it was actually a contractual relationship between Northwest and one of its suppliers that was of particular interest to the Corporation. Although he declined to name the supplier, another GM Executive did. Mark LaNeve, group vice president of GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing indicated that contract with Kimberly-Clark Corporation was the prime motivation. LaNeve said "With Northwest's virtually unlimited supply of Motion Discomfort bags, we will be able to include one with every Silverado Z-71 Sportside as standard equipment." Shares of Northwest traded $4.71 higher while GM shares lost $13.91. General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), the world's largest vehicle manufacturer, employs about 325,000 people globally. Founded in 1908, GM has been the global automotive sales leader since 1931. GM today has manufacturing operations in 32 countries and its vehicles are sold in 192 countries. In 2003, GM sold nearly 8.6 million cars and trucks, about 15 percent of the global vehicle market. GM's global headquarters are at the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit. December 10, 200520 yr since NWA did such a nice job of getting rid of their overpriced mechanics, maybe GM is using them to see how they can get rid of their workers too.
