December 10, 200520 yr Earlier this week, I received an invitation of sorts to "check out" GMAC Insurance. Basically, they want to give me a quote. Since I've been "under the weather", I haven't taken the time or energy to call, but my guess is they won't insure my cars, given their age. I may be wrong...but, that's my hunch. Anyway, just curious to know if anyone else has received a similar mailing &/or has called &/or has insurance through GMAC.... December 10, 200520 yr Yes I have... I cross shopped them and they weren't the cheapest by far. Your mileage may vary.
December 11, 200520 yr I got a few of these after leasing the Equinox. I didnt see about it because I like my current provider and like Knightfans concerns I didnt know if they would want to insure the 1981 Bonneville. I want both cars with the same company. Much easier that way.
December 11, 200520 yr Author I want both cars with the same company. Much easier that way. *nods* Amen! He he he...on that we agree ;).
December 13, 200520 yr I just find it too bad that on full coverage they only will pay to the value of the car in the case of the old ones. I almost lost a 1979 Impala that way. It got rear ended by a Ford pickup and bent the frame behind the rear wheels. Broke the left rear shock mount too. It came within $12 of being totalled. That would have been a shame because it was practiclly like brand new. They should have another way and maybe they do for those of us that like the old stuff but dont want it totaled because somebody scratches it.
December 13, 200520 yr GMAC's the cheapest for my mom and dad. Although it helps he gets an employee discount on that as well. AAA for me. Only $184 a month for the Sol & my '99 Grand Am SE.
December 13, 200520 yr GEICO for me, as of five minutes ago. $99/month for the Cobalt, with full coverage including rental reimbursement.
December 14, 200520 yr Author ...but dont want it totaled because somebody scratches it. *chuckles* I know what you mean. When my 2000 mc LS was damaged in a flood in 2003, the insurance company was not going to total it out, telling me that it was "fixable" and would be "just fine". Bottom line was that "fixing" it cost less than the car was worth...so, no need to be totaled. Problem was that I had to then get a flood title for it, which would deem it "unfit" for complete coverage, which would negate the loan I had on it (which required full coverage). Thus, the car was totaled. Ironically, my agent told me that if one of the older Monte Carlos had been in that same flood ... they would've been totaled on the spot. *sighs*
December 14, 200520 yr In other words, you're saying insurance companies are irrational, illogical, and basically really stupid but lucky con artists? What's new?
December 14, 200520 yr Author In other words, you're saying insurance companies are irrational, illogical, and basically really stupid but lucky con artists? LOL! Well, since you put it that way....he he heh.
December 14, 200520 yr Progressive dings me about $500/6 months for full-coverage (+ glass) on the '03 Suburban and my '04 Malibu. Seems pretty fair to me. In the short time I've had Progressive, I've used them to repair hail damage on my 'bu, storm damage on the Suburban (damn tornado whipped a cart corall at the grocery store into one of the rear quarters..made a helluva dent), and replace the windshield on the Suburban (rock). All in all, they've been very easy to work with, and very, very responsive -- even making follow-up calls to verify that all of the repairs have been to my satisfaction.
December 14, 200520 yr Insurance in this area is the highest in North America. I would say MIC is competitive, but doesn't always beat the competition. For insurance, even more than car buying, it pays to shop around. BTW, I've seen a 54 year old man charged $500/mo. for a Venture (no recent Canadian driving experience) and most people I've been in touch with are paying around $190/mo. for a Cobalt. That is Toronto for you where all the towers downtown are either banks or insurance companies - makes me wonder.
