September 5, 200916 yr I was looking around the Chevy site at the Silverado but I don't know about the axle ratio mentioned. What is better the lower or the higher number? I guess it would depend on the use of the truck. I was going through the locate a vehicle section and reading what each one has and noticed it varies from 3.08 to 3.42.
September 5, 200916 yr Totally depends on usage and expectations. 3.42 is a good, middle of the road, ratio.
September 6, 200916 yr Author I was looking at an XFE that says Rear Axle 3.08 Ratio. So would this indicate the lower number is best for fuel economy but might suffer with towing or an occasional heavier load. It does say it has the trailering package.

September 6, 200916 yr The towing package on the GMT800s had a 3.73 ratio. GM has been moving to lower ratios for better fuel economy.
September 6, 200916 yr Author Does the 6 speed help make the ratio lower also? Also will it still be able to tow effectively or does this sacrifice the towing capacity?
September 7, 200916 yr The tallest gear for the six speed is 0.66 vs. 0.70 for the four-speed, so the newer truck is very much geared for fuel economy. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you're into serious towing.
September 7, 200916 yr Author Sounds good to me. I don't tow much but like to be able to in case I do. Thanks.
September 7, 200916 yr What do you tow? We have an SCCA member who used a new Silverado truck with the 3.42 ratio to tow a Suburu from Alabama to Columbus Ohio to race, and then all of the way back. With a 3500 pound race car, tires, spare parts, tools, etc...the Silverado didn't even know the damn subie was back there. I would think a 3.08 would tow a boat or small camper with ease. And again, good luck with the new truck purchase. Chris
September 7, 200916 yr Author I was thinking of a small trailer with a couple ATV's to have some fun for me and my son.
September 8, 200916 yr I was thinking of a small trailer with a couple ATV's to have some fun for me and my son. 3.08 will do just fine then. I think XFE is rated 7,000 lb for tow and maximum weight rating of 11,000 lb.
September 8, 200916 yr Agreed. Fuel economy aside, the truck will be quieter with a higher (3.08) ratio. ATV's are fun, sounds like you've got some good places to go wheelin' Chris

ATV's are fun, sounds like you've got some good places to go wheelin' Chris The plan is to find them. There are some places the locals have mentioned but I since I don't have either a 4x4 or an ATV yet I haven't experienced them. I know I wouldn't take a new truck on the trails.
September 8, 200916 yr If you ever come North towards Columbus Ohio let me know. You can grab your son, I'll grab mine, and we'll go wheeling on some land friends of mine own. Seriously! I'll even buy lunch... Chris
