I think this might be my first "yes/no" poll.

I like to put the window down, when going over a narrow bridge or driving in a narrow drive between 2 buildings, so I can hear the echo of my engine's sound.

I got into this by listening to the awesome sound of a small-block Olds Rocket V8. As for my current car(s), I have to admit that the Regal sounds really hushed for its high mileage.

Do you make it a point to listen to your engine's sounds echoing back at you?

Yes...although when I still had my 71 Chevelle it sounded a lot better through the flowmasters!

in the colorado... no. i wont even consider an exhaust system for it because no matter what i put on there its gonna sound like rice. now the SS454 had flowmaster 40's and the impala has the super 50's so yes i rode for miles with the windows down at night listening to the symphony under the hood.

Yes, but only because I think I have an exhaust leak from a poorly installed Borla exhaust system (previous owner). I need to take it to an exhaust shop. They didn't line up the tips in the bumper cutouts either. Dummies.

Of course most often with my Bonneville, because it is the loudest out of my fleet. Still it can't match the sound of my ol' V8's.

most of the time. also it's noticable sometimes when it sounds harsh, usually when it's not warmed up much yet. but a 3.1 will never sound as pleasurable as a V8

Not just yes but, hell yes!

Hell yes! And the sound of a V-10 under a bridge is just awesome. No tunnels in Iowa.

Yes, especially in the Cutlass.

1.4L turbodiesel I4's do not make for an attractive engine noise, so 'no'.

My 4.0L 6 in my Jeep sounds like a diesel at idle.

I've enjoyed the exhaust note of my Mustangs in the past, though...driving w/ windows down through tunnels, etc.

The best example of this phenomenon I've experienced was listening to a Ferrari F360 Modena going down the street past the LaScala opera house in Milano..the sound of the car bouncing off the stone walls in was incredible...

Theoretically, isn't an in-line 6 supposed to be sturdier and quieter than a V-6 (at least, in the past)?

The 4.0 Jeep L-6 is another one of those bullet-proof legacy engines, right?

Ya, old AMC engine dating back to the 60s I think. It sounds like a diesel tractor at idle..nothing exciting to hear.

Yes. I do not get many opportunities, but when I do I take full advantage of it. I love the sound of my engine. BMW B44M62tu (dohc 4.4l v8). It may not seem like anything special, but man that engine can sound amazing at times. I haven't done anything to the exhaust besides remove the silencer, and it also has a cold air intake which supposedly will change the sound a bit.

At meets I always get compliments on it. While the meets I went to were typically VW/Audi (making me one of the only V8's there) I remember a B7 RS4 owner and I did a side-by-side comparo and everyone, including the owner agreed my car sounded pretty amazing, even with no load on the engine. With load it almost sounds muscle-ish with a deep burble down low.

V8 M5s have a great exhaust note, so I can see why your car sounds good.
