January 2, 200620 yr Well, I zipped down 95 yesterday afternoon to DC to see that awesome new Ang Lee movie about cowboys. Love the movie, want to see it again, sooo beautiful, yet so gutwrenching. Lots of interesting old pickup trucks in the movie, for those interested. The story spans about 20 years, and starts off with both guys driving beatup old 1950's GMCs... then they move on to 1960's and 70's Fords. Finally, we see Jack in a late 70's Chevy crewcab dually. So, that was one easy New Year's resolution... to see Brokeback Mountain. I know some of you guys would never see it because of the subject matter, and that's ok, but if your wife or girlfriend asks you to go, go, don't be scared. It's so good, I'm still there in Wyoming and Texas, with Jack & Ennis. Edited January 2, 200620 yr by ocnblu
January 2, 200620 yr I wasn't all that affected by it :( There were things in the movie that made me unsympathetic to the main characters, and more sympathetic to one of the supporting characters. I got to see the premiere in LA, though Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were not there because they just had a baby. It was an interesting crowd to say the least.
January 2, 200620 yr Ocn, get in touch with me cutie. I'm anxious to reinact some scenes. In my Malibu-cu-ca-choo.
January 2, 200620 yr LOL! I don't really care to see it, mainly because I'm not a fan of cheating and being fake. I'm not really into either one of them, either. Cowboys? Couldn't they have gotten Steve and Talen from "Laguna Beach" to portray curious surfer boys? Come on, Ang! Turbie went and saw it? Hmmm... :AH-HA_wink: Going to the premiere must have been pretty cool, though.
January 2, 200620 yr The previews that I've seen have hinted that it's a love movie, but not that it's between two men. Now, my dad is intensely homophobic, but is into the whole cowboy thing (we have 4 horses) so based on the previews, it looks like a movie that he'd enjoy. Of course, he'd never watch it when he found out what it was about, but still, the thought of him watching it was a funny mental image to me.
January 3, 200620 yr Author There's nothing girly, or "fabulous" about it. I can see this as a very real movie. This portrays real life for some people. Life is about discovery. Some things that we discover about ourselves... we cannot deal with. Ennis is sooo real because of this. We've all seen it in the news... the conservative, rough, even homophobic public figure with a "secret". Jack is a real character as well. They were products of society, remember. I was very sympathetic toward Ennis' wife and daughters, for example. (Not so much for Jack's wife.) But, I also have to feel sympathy toward the main characters, neither of which went up to that mountain expecting to transform their lives in such unexpected ways. Just the scenery alone is worth the price of the ticket, but the story hits like a train.
January 3, 200620 yr And of course the incredible scenery is Alberta, Canada where the movie was filmed. And my home.....most beautiful area, probably in the world. Edited January 3, 200620 yr by HarleyEarl
January 3, 200620 yr I wish I knew how to quit you, Ocn. [post="66353"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post] Ermm how to "quit" him? My mom wants to see this movie, but is too afriad of bawling her eyes out in the theater. Hah not to mention, Im not sure this movie isn't going to make it to a theater around here. Ah well DVD will solve both problems.
January 3, 200620 yr I want to see it... but will have to wait for DVD unless someone feels like stealing me. :D

January 3, 200620 yr Author Can you imagine another gay-themed movie with pretty boys? Been there, done that, blah blah blah. These guys are real, and believable, plus, Heath and Jake are hot in their own way. Harry, you're so wasted right now, aren't you, old girl? :AH-HA_wink:

Harry, you're so wasted right now, aren't you, old girl? :AH-HA_wink: [post="66630"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post] I don't know of any other gay-themed movies other than this one. Oh wait, "Philadelphia" was one but Tom Hanks played the gay guy and that's not appetizing. It was still a good movie, though. I haven't been there or done that, though with Stephen or Talen you wouldn't have to ask me twice. :P I saw Heath on the cover of Entertainment Weekly and his eyebrows were a little too manicured for me. I know they portray gay characters in the 60's but come on now, they're closeted gay cowboys, not the guy at the MAC counter at your local mall. No doubt that area of North America is beautiful. I'd love to travel right down from Canada into the U.S., crossing Alberta, Montana, Utah, right down to the Grand Canyon. Amazing trip. Ocn, do you think it has any possibilities of winning any awards?
January 3, 200620 yr Author It has already won 7 Golden Globe awards, which is usually a stepping stone to Oscar.
January 3, 200620 yr It has already won 7 Golden Globe awards, which is usually a stepping stone to Oscar. [post="66678"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post] Just nominations so far. I have a comment about bias coming to me, but I don't have any proof of it, and so far everyone seems to love it. I don't know why I was unaffected. Ocn, you spoke of them going to the mountain and the "transformation" happened. It was that transformation I had a problem with. Then it was all the decisions that followed. Then it was Jack's decision that made me question what this movie was trying to say about homosexuality in general. I think you know what I am talking about and you know why I'm being cryptic here. I'm sure it's piqued someone's interest. As for taking homophobic people to go see this movie, I wouldn't. Even though it's not graphic, it's pretty damn graphic without actually showing anything. The scenery is amazing, but so was An Unfinished Life, and I liked that movie better. Curiously there was also an Ennis in it, played by Robert Redford. Both were slow movies, one and alike. I didn't feel truly affected by either, though. Crash was much more affecting to me, a beautiful movie in my opinion.
January 3, 200620 yr Author Yes, you are correct in saying the Golden Globes haven't been held yet. Sorry for misinterpreting that. I guess I'm just excited about it. It has already won numerous "best" awards from regional film critics associations across the country, so far. You are also correct in saying that the characters didn't always do what we hoped they would. For me, though, that just made them more real, because when confronted with an altered reality, we can't always predict what will happen. OK, enough seriousness... I bet you got a lot of admiring glances in that theater, din't you, turbo? Come on, tell us! :AH-HA_wink:

January 3, 200620 yr no phone numbers thanks, though i did become the master of the glance and look at the floor and the glance and look away. Gay men seem to have mastered the "I'm going to eat you up".
