January 3, 200620 yr Giant German carmaker Volkswagen and Detroit auto group Chrysler are joining forces to build a new minivan in the U.S., industry sources said Monday, as VW battles to arrest slumping sales in the intensely competitive American market. A contract between VW and Chrysler, which is the U.S. offshoot of transatlantic carmaker DaimlerChrysler AG is due to be formally signed at next week's Detroit motor show. A VW spokesman declined to comment. Under the deal, Chrysler is to build for VW a mini-van using Chrysler's Voyager as the basis. The new car is to hit the U.S. market in 2008.
