Coworker of mine (who drives a Honda Accord) found out I drive a Neon. She laughed hysterically for a few seconds, then quipped, "isn't that the kind of car dads buy for their daughters when they go to college?".

Ha-ha, everybody's a comic.

Don't feel bad...people call my Miata a chick car. Usually one ride and a few 4 wheel drifts around curves cures that notion pretty quick.

Yeah, me too. I kinda sorta like the Caliber, but not nearly as well as the Neon.

If something happened to the Neon, I'd be looking for a late model Cobalt or Focus to replace it (unless I could find a real gem of Neon). Both are inexpensive, fuel efficient and comfortable.

Both have tons of aftermaket support also. Compared to a Corolla they will feel "solid" as well.

What I hear often from my car isn't strange, but who I hear it from is. I frequently get compliments on the color of my car (bright 90s teal) from girls at the drive-thru windows of restaurants.

When I am driving one of my TAs and I get "That's a great looking Camaro!"

In the Sunfire:

sis's BF: "Why would you drive this car in the snow?"
me: "Because the truck is RWD and it would be even harder."
sis's BF: "Isn't this a sports car?"

I was flattered, but I had to correct him.

Speaking of Neons, there is a 1st gen 4-door for sale up the street for $500. I'm thinking about checking out, because they're pretty fun. Cramped and uncomfortable and rough, but fun. Plus, it would let me take the wagon off the road and work on the engine swap over time.

Getting new tires put on the '95 Monte Carlo some time ago, I walk in the shop to pay:

Me: "Here to pick up my car."
Him: "Right, the Lumina."
Me: "Um, no. I have a Monte Carlo."
Him (with a look of shitting bricks): "You had the white Lumina, right?"
Me: "Um, nooo. The white Monte Carlo." Suddenly I felt like they put my new tires on someone else' car.
Him: "The coupe."
Me: "Yeah."
Him: "Whew, you nearly gave me a heart attack there. But, isn't it a 2-door Lumina?"
Me: "They don't make two-door Luminas."
Him: "Well, sure they do."

I stood in silence for a moment because he had me thinking that, technically, they [b]are[/b] pretty much the same car but for the body style. Still, his ignorance scared me for a second.

My wife just told me about a conversation they had at work. She and two co-workers were discussing Toyota's problems as of late when a regular customer came in and started to share his view on why imports like Toyota, Honda and Hyundai were built better because they were made by Japanese and Koreans. My wife shot back:

"That makes lots of sense because your Toyota Camry was built in Kentucky and my Chevy Optra was built in South-Korea."

Him: "You don't know what you're talking about."

Her: "What ever you say. I mean, the customer is always right. Right?"

Actually, they made 2 door Luminas... but not long, and not after '95.

I think the funniest thing ever said to about the car I was driving was back when I was a security guard... we drove '91 Sentras around a parking lot. I was the supervisor, so I was the only one who could take the cars out of the lot... the lot didn't have a bathroom, and another guard needed a lift to the approved gas station, so I drove him out there... two dorks in Security uniforms in a Sentra.

Well, some pineys in a pickup pulls up along side of us and yells out "Look what the world's coming to... now rent a cops get to ride around in a new Mercedes!" I was so 'WTF?', I was speechless.

My Ninety Eight has been called a Buick, a Park Avenue and Cadillac and a Deville. They were clearly looking at the car. The Toronado was called a "small car" by one woman. I looked at them and went huh? My favorite ones are when people mix up the Ninety Eight and Eighty Eight and and call it: Delta Royale, Delta 98, 98 Royale. My favorite one was when someone called my Ninety Eight a Cutlass.

I laughed when someone called the Toronado a Eldorado.

How could you not see that big rocket symbol?
How could you not see "Ninety Eight" on the trunk big as day?

The other ones that made me laugh are the ones when the Ninety Eight was dropped after 1996, and they put parts of the Ninety Eight on the Eighty Eight. It was called Regency. There are people who were selling the car calling it Ninety Eight, Ninety Eight Regency, Eighty Eight Regency. It was a "Regency". That is it.

That is correct, but that was before the entire W-body changed for '95 and they reintroduced the Monte Carlo as their 2-door coupe of, essentially the same body style. This was in 2006, when most people in anything auto-related could probably remember that the Monte Carlo had been around again for over 10 years.

Yeah, but rewind back to 1991~1992. The new Protege had just come out, and that was described as a ringer for a small Mercedes by the auto mags... and the Sentra was a pretty radical change over the boxy predecessors... but it surely didn't look or drive like a Mercedes.

Oh agreed, its absurd for that dude to think the car was a Lumina... I was merely making a technical point for those keeping score at home. ;-)

The dude probably grew up with a 2 door Lumina... and never realized they stopped making them. "They STILL make 2 door Luminas, right?!? Please, GOD, I hope so!" ;-)

When I had the 2007 Saturn SKY roadster, I entered it in a local car show for the fun of it (May, 2006 when it was still pretty new). Several people asked what engine was under the hood and were surprised when I replied, "2.4 liter 4 cylinder". One guy approached me and asked if it has a 12 cylinder under the hood!! When I told him, 'No, a 4 cylinder', he gave me this awful look and said I had to be wrong because the car had the look that it was very fast. I don't think he was joking around, could have been drunk or high, but not joking

At any rate, the Monte Carlo was a shadow of its former self by being a W-body. Hopefully this won't open the FWD / RWD can 'o worms.

While this wasn't about my car, I got thinking of the ol' days when managing a crew of gas jockeys. One dim bulb walked around an 80's Grand Prix and couldn't figure out where the gas door was. I told him it was behind the plate, so he promptly yanked up on it so hard he bent the plate right off its two upper bolts. Instead of saying sorry, he says, "It's not [b]my[/b] fault they put it in the wrong place." All I could reply with was, "Does that mean it's my fault [b]you[/b] work in the wrong place?"

That happens to me all the time with the '96 Cadillac FWB!! If I use a gas station where the attendant is older (remember in NJ, it's the law that we don't pump our own gas! ), they know exactly where to look. If the attendants are younger, especially at newer Wawa gas stations, they look at both sides, then approach the window with a confused look on their face. When I tell them it's behind the plate, I also tell them the plate is hinged at the bottom so they don't break the damn thing!!

I don't mind FWD, per se, but the heritage is what bugs me ... particularly that the Lumina did NOT replace the Monte Carlo ... it replaced the Celebrity. But, people thought the Lumina replaced the MC since it (the Lumina) was raced in NASCAR.....

According to the book _Chevrolet: The Complete History_ [copyright 1996 by Publications International LTD], on page 348: "With the new Lumina coupe and sedan effectively replacing their Celebrity counterparts...." And, on page 359: "Taking the place of the aging Celebrity sedan was the Lumina sedan ... a coupe version followed in the fall."

Also, the Lumina shared types (Eurosport), dashboards (flat/horizontal), tail lights (3 square on each side, across the back panel, more or less) and FWD with the Celebrity.....

In addition ... the Monte Carlo was the only one of the cousin names (Buick Regal, Olds Cutlass Supreme, Pontiac Grand Prix) to NOT be slapped on a FWD car IMMEDIATELY after the RWD versions ended in 1987/1988.

I know people take my fact-based opinion personally, but my disdain is focused at Ch#$r%*et ... not owners, otherwise I wouldn't have as many friends as I do ... lol. Plus ... *rolls eyes* ... my parents have a '97.....ugola. LOL
