I grew up with one of these monsters-manual trans,manual brakes,manual steering-we called it "The Beast". If I had a scanner I'd show it to you.

The one we had was a '65 with a 304.

then we got a '69? Scout "Ambasador" cool two tone.

then a '78 Scout Traveller with a 345 and a 4spd.

Where's 68 when you need him for pics?

There were a couple of those around for sale. A green one that looked like it would make a great weekend tower. Not in great shape, but not a $h!box. Maybe even a daily driver if you need one vehicle to do a bunch of stuff, but it would never win a beauty contest. The other one was kind of whiteish and was missing some random panes of glass. Also would have been a good weekend toy to take camping, tow stuff, haul stuff, but definately not a daily driver.

I just remembered that my dad put Studebaker full wheel covers on ours so they wouldn't get packed with snow!

Yes, I'd say they all evolved from panel trucks:

Suburban, Travelall and competitors from Dodge and Ford (I think) probably Studebaker and others as well

Don't forget the Jeep Wagoneer (introduced fall of 1962) , which was somewhat smaller but kinda the same sort of thing...

Standard engine was an OHC version of Kaiser's 230 CID inline six. In 1965, an AMC-built 327 V8 became optional. The AMC OHV 232 six also replaced the Kaiser six that year.

During the 1967 model year, a Buick 350 V8 replaced the AMC 327 mill. Later Wagoneers were powered by AMC engines, most frequently the 360 and 401 V8s. The AMC 258 six was also offered on certain models and certain years.
