WHISPERS: Chrysler Crossfire Production May Be Cut by as Much as Two-Thirds

FRANKFURT — A German newspaper is reporting that Wilhelm Karmann, the company that makes the Chrysler Crossfire for DaimlerChrysler, plans to cut jobs as part of a two-thirds reduction in Crossfire production.

A DaimlerChrysler spokesman in Germany, quoted by the Dow Jones News Service, denied the report, calling it "an extremely pessimistic forecast that we don't accept." Nevertheless, the spokesman did acknowledge that some reduction in Crossfire production will take place.

The Crossfire went into production in 2003, and it is intended to have a five-year life cycle, the news service notes.

What this means to you: This is where the synergy between DaimlerBenz and Chrysler could have gone if not for the groundbreaking designs of the 300, Charger and Magnum.

In other news: The Crossfire is still in production?!

I saw a Crossfire a few days ago and was surprised by how decent the styling is. It stands out in a sea of TTs and 350Zs, and at ~$20K used, it's a fantastic value.

It's a beautiful car and built like a tank, but still an "odd" duckling that very, very few people even know exists.

For the quality and styling, the price is incredible and I'd buy one, but I'm not sure if I'd fit...

The Solstice is surely gobbling up the remaining 1/3 of their sales volume Chrysler hopes to keep.

The time for the Crossfire is over. The mechanicals (and the interior) are a generation behind. It's a nice drive, but it has terrible visibility in the hardtop.

They could be worth alot in the future. They are very nice looking, and will be very rare.

I've driven the SRT-6 version.....and that thing scoots! Don't know if it's worth the price though.

I wonder how it would sell if it had a HEMI?

This car has always been a case of "almost but not quite" just like the Prowler.

No surprise for this to happen.

However, an automotive magazine described that what Chrysler had done with the old SLK was amazing considering the crap it was based on. Makes one wonder what a Crossfire based on the new SLK would be like.

Not really, as the the Crossfire was outdated 10 years ago when it debuted as a Mercedes-Benz.
