Hmm...that equation doesn't make much sense, but a fair number of enthusiasts of a particular make & model of car used to proudly proclaim it anyway. This was back in the 1950s.

It was a Buick thing. We can do with 6 what it takes others 8 to do. Or something like that.

Not Buick; Buick was all 8s in the '50s.

Gonna give a total guess here: Hudson

Even tho Hudson also had a straight 8 in the '50s, it was the 6 that was the performance motor and the one that won so many races. Long live the 308!

Yup, the Hudson Hornet was the car I was thinking of.

It could very well be that some other car fans used this slogan too--I know Clifford Research did a lot of work with inline sixes back in those days, especially the OHV sixes from Chevy and GMC. It wouldn't surprise me if the "inliners" who were breathing upon their sixes with Clifford equipment would rally 'round this "6 = 8" sentiment.
