Audi A1: Audi Bringing a Mini-killer?

Audi A1: Audi Bringing a Mini-killer?

We found some sources saying that Audi will bring a Mini killer in 2010 which will be the official successor of the Audi A2, but now called Audi A1.

The current issue of German "Autobild" has this story as a main topic including the first pics ever.

Being currently in Japan we couldn't get our hands on a copy of it, so we had to rely on some pics from an AutoWeek forum. Make your own mind if it looks reliable. To be honest, we don't hope and think so.

Stay tuned for more news!

The Audi A1 is said to arrive with 3 doors, 4 seats, in compact size and with the new twincharger engines. Diesel engines will also be available. It seems like that the Audi A1 will get a shooting brake look, maybe similar to the Audi TT Shooting Brake concept shown in Tokyo.

Prices are said to be between 15.000 and 20.000 Euro.

Come on, that HAS to be a toy. The road pebbles that make of the road look HUGE compared to it. Where are the real pics?

Why not? Everyone else is doing it (except Cadillac and Lincoln of course, but that's probably a good thing, though it someday may be inevitable-I'm JUST getting used to the notion that a subcompact car can have power windows even on its option list). That looks like the ultimate clown car though, so what's next, a BMW Isetta rival? I wonder what that would look like modernized. That A2 is a tall 5-door hatchback crossover sedan, something like an A-Class, but more Audi and conventional looking, but its been around for a while.

The Mini is, just like the original, a fantastic package of nostalgia, practicality and proper styling. This Audi looks ridicilous and corny.

More than any other car EVER the Mini deserves and only works wiht FWD. Sir. Alec Issigonis really did do a superb job of this car. It's still amazing all these years later.

That being said I'll have a RWD mid-engined (pushrod V8?) Mini copper someday. Perhaps I'll drop a Northstar inot the rear seat of a Mini with the cradle and all. :D

So, can we stop counting Audi as a luxury manufacturer when it sells four times as many economy-priced cars as it does luxury cars?

Well, as it turns out according to Autoblog, you're right in that this isn't an actual Audi concept:

Audi's A1 "MINI-killer" a hoax

Had to look up what the hell an Isetta was and found that rendering. I think given BMW's nomenclature that would be a -1 Series.

This is an actual A1 sketch from a German magazine, Autobild.
