been looking around to see how easy it is to "move" windows from one to the other. using xp x64 on an AMD sb750 mobo using sata-2 hard drives in ide mode

what i've found, a long process, or just "update drivers"...

has anyone done this before?

ah ok. i'll probably just wait for the NG hard drives to get here and install my W7 on that with ahci.

thanks

I managed to do it with some finaggling in the registry. To be honest, I didn't notice a performance gain with my SSD's when I enabled ACHI, and switched back to IDE because the boot process was actually faster, and to update the firmware. In my opinion, isn't worth the time, and potential trouble unless you want hot-swap.

0. Have ACHI Disabled in Bios

1. Exit all Windows-based programs.

2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.

4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci

5. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.

6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.

7. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor

8. Reboot

9. Enable ACHI in Bios
