But, there is the Avalanche idea...

$2,500 is too much for what it needs. I think more like $1,500...assuming the suspension is in decent shape. Check bushings and isolators, tie rods, etc.

I do have to agree with DF.

My grandfather used to have one of these. I must admit it had the very striking color combo of a 'copper' body and a dark red/brown top.

Now : painfully slow, tremendously floaty, rather boring, but whatever floats yer boat.

I'm still aiming for an Avalanche.... this would be a transitional vehicle.

Right now I'm stuck in a catch-22. Most of the time after work I don't have a vehicle. I also have an apartment building that is mostly vacant and in need of repairs. Right now I just need reliable way to get me and my tool boxes to my apartment buildings when I don't have the CR-V.

Further, I refuse to finance a vehicle. Buying an Avalanche means saving up $15k cash, which I just can't do when I'm paying the mortgage on a vacant apartment building.

I could spend $2500 on a $h!ty ass Cavalier and hate it.

I could spend $2500 on a 295k 1987 S-10 with a rusted through bed.

Or I could spend $2500 on this and drive it till I can afford an Avalanche then garage it and have my "play" vehicle.

I do agree that the price is a bit more than what it should be... but it's in very good condition for a 26 year old vehicle. None of the issues are a surprise.

As for the performance... keep in mind that my "dream" car is an '85 Toronado....

It's a long term investment for me. Ideally, I want to acquire more in the future. The building I'm working on is 4 units. 2, two bedrooms, 1 one bedroom, 1 efficiency, 5 garages.

On these 307s, I can generally just give the valve cover bolts 1/2 a turn with a socket wrench and it'll buy me some time.... that can only be done so many times. The owner said he's never done that before and the valve cover gasket leak is still very minor, so I'd probably have some meat to work with there.

S-10s are a dime a dozen here, I've seen plenty of clean ones.

The ones that look reasonably priced for their year and mileage end up having rust holes or torn up interiors or are pissing fluids all over the pavement or all of the above.

It's pretty much the same thing on LI. There aren't many desirable used trucks below $15K that don't have one or more of the attributes you mention. And once I get to $15K, the fact that I am sitting on 2K of GM Card earnings and am eligible for the GM Supplier discount as a credit union member starts to make buying new almost more feasible.

As for the 98, I agree with those that say you should haggle the price down, but just because you want to get a deal. If the body and interior are in good shape (no rust outside, no rips/cracks/fading inside), that alone makes it almost worth it. If you do the work yourself, parts for B bodies are everywhere and not expensive. Even if the worst were to happen, and the 307 died, any small block should be a relatively easy transplant.

My take: offer him $1750-$2000 and see if he bites.

Nice looking Ninety Eight. You could fix the things wrong with it and keep driving the car. Check for rust underneath and other areas. That was one of my favorite Ninety Eight body styles. Just know you will have to invest to make it run better. That car is a regular Regency too. It is not a Regency Brougham. You know I would know. If the interior is in great shape, and the mechanicals are in great shape other than what you said, talk them down in price and invest a little to fix the car.

It looks like a decent C-body, Drew. Those 307s chug along forever, understressed as they are. I'd buy it if I were you. It seems like something you want.

I know 68 will be disappointed that I picked wrong wheel drive instead of rear wheel drive..... but picking RWD for "improved handling" in these cars is like picking an African elephant instead of an Asian elephant to go through the slalom with because it's ears are bigger.

There is a restorable gold '66 Toro parked in a driveway nearby...seems to be solid w/ a little rust. Love the design of the '66-67.

This will be my 3rd Oldsmobile and 2nd Toronado.

The Toronado is a good move, because if kept in good condition, it can be a classic car that you could take to a car show if you wanted to. Where as a late 80s Ninety-Eight, or similar car will never really be thought of as a classic or a collectible.

$2500 is too much for that Ninety-Eight, an Aurora or similar mileage can be found for $4,000 (maybe less) and the Aurora is the best Oldsmobile ever made.

Congrats on the new ride! It looks to be in fabulous shape. If there's any car that's appropriate to be FWD, it's a Toronado.

I may never have cared for this car (or its siblings), but they stood out in any crowd from day 1. Nothing is quite like them.

And, I actually owned one from '82.

Oh and Drew, make SURE that you get the key for the wire wheels - it sucks alot not to have it.

It's got dual flowmasters on it.... apparently it's a smidge louder than a typical Toronado..... but I doubt its any faster.
