i'll give you a hint...

because of emissions rules, this much horsepower was not avalible from a manufacture for more then 20 years...

but which manufacture & model surpassed the LS-6's hp rating?

Dodge Viper.

God I love Chevelles!

haha i knew it was a viper, but how much hp did the early vipers have?

haha i just raced one yesterday and i got my clock cleaned... although he was modded i wasnt quite sure how much power he had...

They started around 400HP and moved up to 450 around '96 then up and up and up. I love that Chevelle (and El Camino) held the title so long.

OK, I'm not trying to be a pain here, but the LS6 ratings in 1970 were "gross" horsepower, weren't they?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not downplaying this engine--because it definitely was a powerhouse.

True. However, the actual HP was more like 500. Manufacturers played it loose with the numbers back then. There were other GM engines that out-powered Corvettes from time to time, but the LS6 was the only "official" out powering champion.

haha, my friends dad has a 70 SS 454 chevelle... and its his dream car... wanted it ever since he was a kid... now hes got it... in 1970... 1/4 mile time was 13.1 i believe... about the same speed as my trans am :)

uh guys... yur talkin about underrated engines here and you forgot one...a very very ridiculous corvette motor... the 1969 L88... rated at 430... the L71 was actually rate dhigher at 435... but due to aluminum block and other tweaks... the L88 actually put out close to 580... im not takin anything away from the chevelle... that thing was a monster...but lets pay a little respect to the true underrated king of the road back then shall we? (btw... i did the math a while ago... changed to net hp... the L88 stillhad over 400... it wuz around 464... which wuznt touched until the late 90s viper...)

lets be real though Dodge needs 2 extra cylinders to match that power!

Oh yeah I always thought the L88 was underrated thanks for clearing that uo!

How did the ZL1 motor not get mentioned in this thread? :)

The LS6 was the highest rated Horsepower figure ever released by Chevrolet until the Z06 (C6). The L88, ZL1 etc. were what I meant "other engines".

ZL1's werent production...

also the late ZL1's also werent production either...

the ZL1s were most definitely production... just bcuz only 2 were ordered doesnt make them not production...if im correct i believe there were 69 camaros ordered with the ZL1... that number could be wrong... but either way... it was production... it had to be so chevy could use the engine in stock car races and 68... i ddint mention the ZL1 simply bcuz only 2 were made... that thing was sick... if i remember right i think actual output was like... 630-650 gross... never transferred that to net... but if 580 is 464 in net... id imagine the ZL1 was pushin close to 500...

man i love C3 vettes... the beatiful flowing lines... ridiculously powerful engines... oh man... it makes me happy just thinking about it

well the 69 ZL1 Yenkos... werent production...

but the 2 corvettes... and probably others were made... but i dont know

The 69 '69 ZL1s were most definitely prodution, just COPO rather than RPO as were all 427 Camaros.

The 4th gen ZL1s were not production, they were built by GMMG on 2002 B4C cars.
