Isn't 'Ute' short for 'Utility Sedan' ?

Why then is there a '55-56 Chevy pick-up in there & called a ute... or do they call all trucks 'ute's Down Under ?

    I, like Camino, desire for GM to offer the Ute here in North America. I wanted a Sierra regular cab sportside Z71 and a Chevy SSR, but financials weren't there at those times to make either of them happen. In 2-4 years from now I can see my situation being different and a Ute (or El Camino or GMC whatever) being an addition to my driveway.

    What I'd love to get right now though is a Holden Ute brochure. Too bad Holden won't mail brochure requests to the US :(
