Camry -- good

Lucerne -- good

Azera -- good

Impala -- acceptable

RAV4 -- good

Pilot -- good

Explorer -- good

M-class - good

Ram -- good

Essentially they're handing over their frontal offset test to the automakers, while performing periodic audit tests (Lucerne).

Well, they say it'll allow more side and rear crashes, since nearly all cars get "good" frontal ratings now.

Allow? They're funded by a group of insurance agencies, right? I would imagine they could afford to test every car back to 1937.

Just from my premiums alone!

The Impala went down from the last generation?

I'm wondering about that too. On the side note, the LaCrosse and Grand Prix both got Good on all. So improved styling means sacrificing safety?

You call the new Impala imporoved styling? Your post is dated April 2nd so I'll assume it's not as ridiculous as the April Fools Jokes I had to read earlier.

Perhaps it's because GM crashed the SS Impala, which has larger wheels (less tire deformation; more intrusion) and a larger engine. Remember the W-body wasn't originally engineered to accommodate a small-block V8.

No, seriously. It may look bland, but the older one just looks like an amalgam of plastic. The new one is a welcome change, at least to me.

C&G is about voicing opinions, right? :D

Ditto...

... the new interiors alone are HUGE improvements. The power boosts, the cleaner looks inside and out, the added features... MUCH more improved vehicle over its predecessor.

It actually got a good after GM submitted the data to the IIHS. The IIHS corrected a GM error. There was a story about it last week.

The problem with the 2000 Impy was not the outside looks (except for that stupid rubber stripping), but the interior, which was absolutely perfect for a utility/work sedan, but below average for most other purposes.

Don't forget the rear taillight setup. UGLY! I think it's very telling how that Sport Appearance package became so ubiquitous.

The Impala rides a revised W-body while the Lucerne is an updated of the G-body. Two completely different FWD platforms, G being the newer and more resiliant.

Please delete my last statement from your quote. I checked it and you're right. I forgot that the DTS and Buick only shared the same platform.

I just assumed that the W body and the G body were so similar that they were essentially the same platform.

The incriminating evidence shall remain! :admin:

Just kidding. Its a common mistake, really.

Yea I misread the article.

The IIHS tested the Impala SS. I guess the extra mass upfront changed the rating from the previous generation V6.

The 2000-2005 received a good in the IIHS test.

Now this begs the question, why test the SS? Knowing that people buy based upon these ratings. Considering, the V6 probably gets a "good". And is the volume vehicle.

Or for God's sake GM should send the IIHS a V6 Impala for testing. Assuming the structure is a "Good" like the other Ws, that way there will be both ratings on the IIHS homepage.

Does the IIHS pick the car to test (a la Consumer Reports) or do they ask GM for a doner car and GM decides what to supply......(a la any other "buff" mag)....?

IIHS traditionally buys cars from the lots, but with this new change in relying on mfgr data, they probably have little say besides choosing what data out there to use.

Yes - Why the Impala SS was chosen is beyond me with the new system. But GM can always donate a base V6.
