Domestics January 2011 Sales

General Motors reported a January 2011 sales rise of 23% today with retail sales increasing 36%. GM’s small crossovers, the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, continued their trend of kicking butt and taking names with a surge of 35% and 48% respectively. Some of that surge is a credit to additional production coming online at the Oshawa facility, making more vehicles available to meet the rising demand.

Other interesting points:

• Apparently someone returned an XLR: it’s listed as -1 sales for January
• The DTS and Lucerne both had massive jumps in sales as they approach the end of their runs. Up 120% and 61.8% respectively.
• Cadillac CTS up 70% over last year.
• The Lambda Triplets (GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave) combined sold 18,702. January 2010 they sold 15,259.
• Only four of GM's cars still in production took a sales hit this month. Lacrosse was down 11.2%, Malibu down 14.2%, Camaro down 11.3%, and Corvette down 15.6%
• 42% of Buick buyers in January were non-GM owners.
• 321 Chevrolet Volts sold in January; 650 sold so far.

Ford reported sales of 127,317 for January 2011 for an increase of 27% over the same month last year. Retail sales were up 35% for cars, 22% for Utilities, and 24% for trucks. There was a planned 27% decline in sales to daily rental companies.

Other interesting points:

• Ford Fusion set a new record for January, up 18% to 14,346, with retail sales up 39%.
• The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid accounting for 24% of MKZ retail sales. Overall MKZ retail sales up 42%
• Ford Escape still going strong with sales of 13,973
• Mercury all but gone, only 248 sold for all of January. All of them were Grand Marquis.
• Ranger sales down drastically, 31.1%, but still outsold Flex
• Transit Connect sales nearly doubled

Chrysler Group LLC Reported January 2011 sales of 70,118, making a 23% increase over January 2010’s 57,143 units. Chrysler’s Jeep, Dodge and Ram brands all posted double digit increases. Chrysler brand down 7%.

Other interesting points:

• Jeep up 47%, led by the new Grand Cherokee up 130%
• Durango racing back on the scene with 5113% increase – 1,199 sold for January
• Caravan up 82%
• Chrysler brand down across the board except for Town and Country.
• Chrysler 200 Sales not yet ramped up to Sebring levels.

Malibu is unsurprising. Really needs a refresh rather than going a full year as is, but oh well.

Camaro is unsurprising. Little doubt that demand would fall off a bit now that the car has been around for over a year, and people who were dying to get one already did. Convertible should help sales though.

LaCrosse is a bit surprising.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid accounting for 24% of MKZ retail sales. Overall MKZ retail sales up 42%

This isn't surprising. The MKZ Hybrid is something of a bargain, since IIRC yo don't have to pay a big premium to get the hybrid model compared to most cars.

Don't forget:

Town & Country had more sales in the United States than any other minivan in 2010

So even without counting the Caravan Chrysler also is ones again the sales king of minivans, and the new ones are only just now getting to dealers.

It's going to be interesting to see how sales respond once all of the new models are on the showroom floor.
