Yup, he just killed another one. It was a huge one this time, and he has a hole in his nose to show for it. It must have pissed him off when it bit him, because he just wouldn't stop chomping on it long after it was dead.

I think he broke every bone in its body.

My brother had a small German Shepard- it killed everything that moved, esp ground hogs.

He has a pit bull/boxer mix now, strong as anything, this one likes to gnaw on turtles; gnaws on them until all the color is blanched out of their shells and they're basically white. I don't think she kills them all; what a terrifying ordeal that must be, eh?

I never forget than my dogs or cats are predators. Even the most friendly dog or cat will not pause to sneak a snack. I suspected my Golden Retriever was poaching the wildlife, and it took me nearly ten years to prove it.

And cats... LOL, I always laugh to see a little 7 pound female dragging a much larger rabbit around.

Hey, Camino, what breed is Arkus? Are your dogs diggers? I'm trying to figure out a good guard dog that isn't going to dig its way out of the yard.

They are Alaskan Malamutes, and they don't dig very often (unless they are after something).

But, other than the way they look, they wouldn't be such great guard dogs - they like everybody.

Still, they are intimidating to look at.

Yeah, that's the way Golden Retrievers are. Lousy guard dog, loves everyone. But he is 95 pounds of big dog, has a big dog bark and scares the absolute stuffing out of some stupid people.

I like the Malamutes and the Huskies, but since I've had German Shepherds before, I should stick to them, as they are hands down a better guard dogs. I was also considering some Rottweilers. I know GSDs can be diggers. I had enough digging with the Golden when he was younger. I swear he it half-bulldozer. I've watched him tear a 3 foot hole in gravel that was packed like concrete in a matter of seconds. When he digs in sand or duff, its like a cartoon... he can disappear in seconds, jettisoning material 30 feet.

I'd consider pit bulls, but it seems like many of them at the shelters are mutts (nothing wrong with mutts) and kinda undersized. I like a big dog... in a dark color.

My first Malamute, Lasher, only ever didn't like one person. The guy later turned out to be a real creep.

I was shocked that Lash didn't like him - but it was very clear, Lash circled him and growled. He had never done that before, and never did it after.

And, a surprising number of people are afraid of Malamutes - despite how friendly they are.

I prefer big dogs, but I don't care for ones that bark alot, so Shepherds are out for me. Malamutes bark rarely, but it is a big bark.

Wow... real groundhogs, huh? Supposedly they are in south Jersey, but I have never seen groundhogs here. Maybe they aren't thrilled by the sandy soil. I've seen black bear here, but not groundhogs.

Great dog Camino Malamutes are very loving I like em but live in the city. I've had Keeshonden for the last 27 years save for maybe 20 months between dogs currently have a extremely large female 55lbs. Gracie she's great but a bit of a barker

I remember as a kid my family's German Shepherds and Dobermans chasing groundhogs on the farm in E. Ohio..

But the strongest memories I have involving them was my Dad standing on the front porch or the back porch and picking them off w/ his rifle (the crazy things that people can do in a rural area on 150 acres of land!).

My dad used to do that on less than 2 acres...

Malamutes are sort of the HD version of Siberian Huskies.

Much bigger, and with brown eyes, they are the endurance runners where the Huskies are the sprinters.

Only good thing I can say about little dogs is that inside every little dog is the attitude of a big dog. I can't get beyond the yelping bark. Drives me nuts.

Just now got another one, and insisted on carrying it the the back door.

I have to scrape/ paint/ glaze a double window that's right over a groundhog burrow, and I'm not liking the idea much.

I ran the hose in it some today, but the water opened another burrow below the current one... and the A/C condenser is perched right at the hole.

How deep do these things dig?

I have to get them out of there somehow...

They tunnel like mad, hard to say how large the burrow might be.
