Back in the mid to late 2000's, Chrysler offered versions of the Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee with a diesel. And they still aren't shy to offer them once more. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne says the company will once again offer diesel powerplants for their larger vehicles. The first vehicle to lead the charge will be the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2013. In its November 2009 five-year plan, Chrysler said 14% of it's global sales will be diesel, an increase from 8% in 2009. Marchionne also admitted that he has little choice but to also offer hybrids in the near future. He's skeptical about the technology, its cost, and sales number. But he acknowledges the new CAFE standards coming in make hybrids a necessary. "I have no other way of getting to 2025 numbers than by going to hybrids." The first hybrid to arrive from the pentastar is believed to be the Chrysler 300 in 2013. Source: Automotive News
October 19, 201114 yr He's a smart man to have doubts about hybrids. The ridiculous CAFE standards are killers... of affordability, simplicity and vehicle choice. I am for diesels, which nowadays have no real trade-offs over a gas engine, aside from a mild initial cost penalty.
