They asked the chairman how many people have applied from other plants to transfer/work at his when a job opening becomes available such as somebody that takes the buy-out.

The answer they got was shocking. Just three people have said they would move to his plant to keep their job.

My take? GM is going to be royally screwed by the # of employees taking the buy out and it will catch them off guard in a big way.

Watch for them to hire off the streets in the 4th quarter.

did you forget the massive job banks they have?

Agreed.

Josh, whwn they close a few more plants....problem solved.

So far, there have not been as many people taking the buyout...

The buyouts are limited in cases where plants would not have enough staff remaining. If too many people from one plant apply my guess is they'll approach some to stay a few more years. Of course a lot of people may come from Delphi.

Yep. Every plant is going to be different.

My dad's plant is a good example, as there has not been as many takers yet..

This anti-GM schtick is getting really old, Josh, really old...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

How am I being anti-GM? By pointing out that more people will take this buy-out than GM expects and that they will have to hire off the streets to fill jobs?

I'd like for you to tell me how I'm being anti-GM, Croc. Because your statement just proves to me how little you know about myself and my enthusiasm for GM.

Yea, predicting certain doom for a company is really showing your support and being enthusiastic

Please point out to me where I've predicted doom for the company? By simply stating that GM could be in a position where they are working very, very light? I'm not the only one that thinks that or sees that as a real possibility.

Others here do too, some you take the all mighty word from.

its easier to hire than to get rid of.

My dad looked at the buyout but he will stay since he wants to pay off the cottage the home then get his Solstice then retire.

The takers on the buyout could be very large and certain plants could find themselves strapped for personel. This is more than GA plants but an across the board offer to all UAW worker. GM has a lot of powertrain operations as well as technicians in other aspects of the corporation that need to be factored in. Some operations might have to first draw upon displaced worker in the jobs bank. One thing I am sure of, GM's HR department will be very busy.

There are still a lot of ifs out there for the potential for new hires:

- Flowback from DPH (5,000)

- Flowback from US plants that are closing (30,000)

So in theory, GM needs 35,000 people to accept the offer for their to be a shortage.

It is my opinion that GM should receive about 35,000 buy outs.

The biggest issue facing new hires at GM is the current contract. A new tier for new hires would have to be written into the contract to prevent the current situation from arising 30 years from now.

That means the potential:

Lower pay for new workers

401k type retirement plan

Shared burden for health care

Two words: Job bank.

Don't forget Delphi...

I don't take the "all mighty" word from anyone. Even evok, with whom I agree more than almost anyone else, can tell you I have disagreed with him a number of times; I just take much of my correspondence with him to PM.

I can atest to that. We do disagree but I am more often right. Joke :P

True, but I don't expect GM to do any hiring any time soon....

New equipment is rolling in to some of the plants, So I'm pretty sure there will

not a great need for more employees...

My dad's plant would be a good example of one of many plants that are being updated....
