Dealership etiquette....

Featured Replies

How does one walk into a dealership and say one is just looking? Usually when I tell salesman that, they either hover over my shoulder constantly or completely ignore me when I do have a question. And also...anyone have any car buying advice as to how to make things go smoothly at a dearership?

Unfortunately, I don't know if there is a way to be honest about "just looking" and not have them hover. Maybe if you were to say "I'm just looking, and don't want to be bothered. If any salespeople hover, I'll make a note of your name, and purposely avoid buying from you, and encourage all my friends to do the same." Unfortunately, while this will probably work, it'll just run off salesman A, and you'll have to say the same thing to salesman B and C as well.

Aside from most Saturn dealers (RIP), there are VERY few dealerships that are truly low-pressure on sales. Most push their sales people like crazy, and go through them like crazy. The salespeople have to do anything they can to get a sale, and are pushed to be proactive and not leave any potential customer to just wander around & leave.

My local dealership has learned to stop chasing me around.. :duck:

Just be honest...if they don't like it, too bad...

Tell 'em you just filed for bankruptcy.

LOVE IT!

Tell them the last five cars you bought were SATURNS and you'd like to be treated with respect. Meaning let me look and if I have any questions I will come and find you.
