Well last month I had to get a new computer after 8 years, it died. Now my monitor, an NEC LCD is on its last legs, it took 20 minutes for it to get its act together this morning.

ANYHOO, if anyone has ideas on which type of monitor is the best, I'd appreciate hearing your opinions.

Any flat panel monitor will do as long as it has a VGA connection. Though I will say to avoid the Westinghouse branded ones that Target sell.

This looks like a good one, I've had good luck with Viewsonic.

edit: it's also an LED screen instead of a standard LCD.... it uses 50% less power than a normal LCD and is slimmer and lighter.

Here's a slightly smaller Acer. Great ratings, less expensive, all business and nothing fancy.

I've had good luck w/ Viewsonic and Dell flat panel monitors.

Olds' second suggestion is a good one. But TigerDirect/CompUSA sells this Acer model which has a higher resolution, for cheaper.

Sweet, I just got home from running errands. I left the computer on because of the monitor situation (it was fine when I left). When I got home, it was a gray screen of death with a black cloud. When I worked the mouse, it came on, but it was my home page jumbled. At least I could see the prompter, so I clicked on C&G in my favourites and it straightened itself out. Just not sure how much time it's got left.

If your new computer has a DVI or HDMI out port for display, it is best to get a monitor that has one of those inputs.. generally better than VGA (you will need an HDMI or DVI cable to go along with it).

What does the icon on the computer for one of those ports look like, a cactus?

It's more likely it has an HDMI port than DVI.. (HDMI on left, DVI on right)

It would be near the standard VGA port.

I got 13 years out of my Viewsonic here at home; it finally sputtered to a stop. I just stripped it down for scrap yesterday. That's a pretty good ROI, IMO.

Well I was going to go ahead with one of the links you guys helped me with, but then the old monitor died completely. So I went to Staples this morning and purchased an AOC e2450Swd 24" wide screen LED monitor, on sale for $139.99 from $179.99. I've never heard of the brand, so I went and bought the warranty. It plugs in to the computer with the blue isosceles trapezoidal plug with screws, whichever one that is.

This thing is HUGE. I hope it's reliable. Thanks for the help, everyone.

Awesome, You should be fine as there are only a few LCD makers even with the 100's of different names. If you want to go multimonitor and are not afraid to open your old LCD, you can fix it.

This web site has great info on how to repair LCD screens and make them last. I just replaced my burnt out lcd bulbs.

I will post one more from home later, but for 20 - 50 dollars you can replace the LCD bulbes and capacitors and get your monitor working again if you are not afraid of a little work.

That'd be the VGA. Sounds like a good buy though, Staples has never steered me wrong before.
