The Year Is: 1983

The year is 1983 and you've bought your first house. She needs a little work and your current ride hasn't really been cutting the mustard when it comes to hauling building materials.

A full sized truck won't fit in your garage and you don't want to risk parking in the driveway or street, so you decide a small truck is in order. The only question is, which one?

Got a suggestion for a year and genera you'd like featured? Shoot me a PM.

I chose S-10 because I had a black, shortbed 4X4 bought new in '83 and I'd do it all over again.

Given your premise, my #1 vote is the GMC S15 pickup as it could haul more than my #2 pick - the GMC Caballero. However, if I wanted more creature comfort and a better ride/handling package, I would have choosen the Caballero as #1.

Love the El Camino/Caballero, but chose S-10 for 4X4 capability.

Hmmm...1983. My Dad and brother both bought pickups that year, the first one for each of them. My brother bought a new silver and gray two-tone S10 regular cab short bed 2wd, and my Dad bought a low mileage used '79 Dodge Power Wagon short bed 4x4. I learned to drive in it a couple years later..

I really wouldn't want any of them. I suppose, as opposed to walking, it would be a dart toss between the Ranger, S-10 & Camino... but I wouldn't be happy with 'em.

For doing any real work, none of these would fit the bill.

That said, among the choices the Camino is an easy choice - short of 4x4 capacity, it can do anything the others can in greater style and comfort, and with more power.

You included the picture, not me. ;-) And your copy does not specify that the vehicle needed to be new.

Hilux. Definitely the Hilux.
