anyone excited for this?

think the laptop models are selling well, it'd be great for a htpc.

hopefully the 4/6/8 models do well against sandy bridge spec intels, at least for similar price points.

anyone else keeping up with this?

release for desktop trinity is supposed to be oct 2nd, and "vishera", like a week or 2 after that.

Yay for CPU's that will finally be comparable in single core performance to their K10 based predecessors from three years ago!!!

Piledriver is necessary because Bulldozer was rather uncompetitive in IPC for single-core performance. Bulldozer was an embarassment for AMD.

I had a Phenom II 965 BE, but it overheaated under all conditions and i decided i would stop using it before i killed it.

bulldozer was slow in single threaded performance, a comparison at toms hardware(i think) showed that trinity, at least in converting music to aac/mp3, was ~15% faster than BD, at the same speed, and w/o L3 cache. so yes, S.T. performance should be pretty good.

trinity's platform should have an upgrade path for next year, while "vishera"(FX83xx) will be the last of the am3+ platform.

unless you're playing games at U.H.rezs or video encoding and such, the highest end chips aren't that much more useful for 90+% of the consumers, right?

..unless the NG consoles change something.....

don't forget that "BD+" has a fuller instruction set, in some ways than, intel has, at least on I.B.

The problem is that an i3 can outperform an FX-8150 in most instances. So one of Intel's low-end chips will beat out AMD's highest-tier offering in gaming. So if you're part of the 90% that don't need a high end, i5-2500k chip, you'll just get an i3.

i understand that argument. and after vishera(piledriver FX) amd won't have highend only CPUs for the consumer. most of programs right now use 2 threads, some do use 3-4, and that's where gamers/highER end would go with an i5, true quadcore.

when intel can actually get ahead of amd in graphics, and not just because of a manufacturing node advantage, then AMD will be sunk on the C(entral)PU, and consumers will cry. (except intel fanbois) the "APU" evolution does seem to have caused intel to slowly turn their boat. is maxwell(?) does indeed 2x the performance of IB, then intel wil have something to combat their weakness to amd with... for the time being.

you do know "bulldozer" can keep up with SB, almost (i think), in video rendering, right? as programs are coded to the design, it will shine... sometimes trying to jump ahead does make one falter, on purpose, or accidentally.

I think I'll be happy with my ivy bridge i7 for a while. :) Still, I really want AMD to stay competitive - it's excellent for the consumer, and I've generally been just as happy with AMD and Intel products, and don't lean too much toward a brand. Instead I always look at bang for the buck at the time of each purchase. Unfortunately, at the time of each of my computer upgrades (work desktop & work/personal laptop) at different points this year, Intel won out with the i7 both times. AMD, step it up!

By the way, that is me with the 965 above, i forgot my password and that is my Facebook attatched account, which was using a really old picture of me for some reason.

I got it to run in regular temps by volting it down to 1.275 and clocking it to the 955's 3.2Ghz

In terms of cost, AMD priced Piledriver reasonably.

But the highest-end FX chip still sucks compared to an i5 760, a two-generation old cpu, in most applications that people use. Dumb.

I agree, the bulldozer architecture obviously has problems in single threaded apps and ones that don't use the latest and greatest extensions.... but it is also the last gen for the high performance proc. w/o a gpu in it, supposedly.

but also you're mixing target audiences i think...."most people" don't need an i5, and certainly not an FX chip.

2 more things to look at what the differenc ebetween amd and intel with.. intel is one node ahead, amd is going 28nm next, and then maybe 20 in 2 years, not positive though.

and bulldozer was "hand drawn", pile driver was mostly extension addition, and the .use of the 3rd party tech for ~10% less power or ~10% faster....as far as the less technical people would care about. iirc in 2 more years the design will be computer aided, maximizing space usage. it'd be like moving the design to the next node.
