Car's running fine. Wonderfully. Cam's been installed for 200 miles now...

So my dad takes my car out for a test drive and notices a whining/long-clicking sound. Weird. Coming from driver's side (he says top, I say bottom). Engine's running and we're checking it out. He pulls the throttle cable a little and engine dies and won't start again. It cranks a little, but not enough to get her going. Alternator and battery were just checked and perfectly fine.. WTF?!

I bet I can beat you in a race.

lol I had JUST got done telling you that and my dad came back home complaining..

Hmm, that doesn't sound good (obviously).

Did you check to make sure the cam is still working fine? I think you need to take it to a tuner so they can make it run smoother (I need to do that with the GTO too, except I can of like the rough idle at stops).

This sort of sounds like the problem you had before, except not to the same degree. What was wrong when that happened?

Nope, def not like the last time.. last time was really loud popping from exhaust. Spark plugs were on wrong coilpacks.

We think it's the timing chain... I hope.

Oh, and I had the car tuned out. That should be good.

Spark plugs, eh? When we went to go pic the GTO up all of a sudden the check engine light came on when we were sitting there. You could still start it, but it needed new spark plugs.

Another possibility is that the computer could be confused. When we took the GTO in because we wanted to know why it idled rough (at that point we didn't know it had a perfoamce cam) they said on their receipt that the "performance cam may cause a check engine light to come on, but it wil go out and clear itself." So, possibly the new cam is "confusing" the car.

I really don't know and am just throwing out whatever I can think of.

Meh, thanks, Northie, but the car's tuned out.

Timing chain sounds like it could most definitely be right. Looks like we'll be tearing up the engine again tomorrow lol

do you have a timing light and stuff? if you do use it.

Hmmm. sounds Electrical to me.

IDK how to use a timing light. Plus, don't those only work on cars with distributors?

Wow.... good luck with that.

Marcia & I both love the Q45 but thank god for that 30 day warranty

from the dealership. The car went through a MAF, 2 knock sensors,

an Ox2 sensor & a serpentine belt as well as a throttle cable adj. in

just the past 6 weeks. Our cost was only about $210 thus far but

the dealer payed out another $1000 or so.

We've been going hrough service engine soon lights like it's our last

day on earth. Still love that car though.

Okay, it doesn't seem to be the timing chain. How do you test the timing chain tensioner?

I'm not sure. The best thing to do is get the timing cover off. and see how much slack is in the chain.

Hwen you goto start it the first time, does it want to crankover at first, then just stop doing anything there on after? Also, are the lights at all dim? like the headlights? I had a problem where my car wouldn't start, and it turned out that the terminals needed some cleaning and the connectors weren't sitting quite right on the battery.

By thw way, the sound it made when it was running...did it sound mechanical or electrical? It sounds like you may have some sort of electrical problem. I could be wrong, but it's a thought.

I've honestly never heard an "electrical sound". It was a whining/slapping/chirping all tied into one.

Maybe I'll throw it back together and see if it starts again tomorrow...

Pretty much. I did not enjoy the fact that our repairs ate away

the guy's comissions but fair is fair. I payed asking price and I

got a warranty. You loose some you win some. They probably

made $2000 or so on the car, if not $3000. In any case they

are certainly not in the red becasue of those repairs.

Even if I had to pay for that crap out of pocket I'd still be happy

with the car. It's much more satisfying to drive than the FWD

STS. I used ot be all about 0-60 times and 1/4 times... now

I can say that I do miss the extra power of the North* but I'm

much happier wiht my Non-Caddy-4100 mated to a RWD car.
