While Mercedes-Benz and Audi have offered performance versions of the flagship sedans, BMW has been the outlier. The closest the German automaker has gotten is the B7 done by BMW specialist Alpina. But BMW M's engineering boss Albert Biermann has dreams of an M7.

“I would love to compete in this area of the market. The money is just there to pick up. An M7 would be a much different proposition to the B7,” Biermann told Autocar.

Now Biermann says such a model isn't in their plans at the moment. Currently, the division is looking into all-wheel drive for the M5 and M6, and possible M version of the 3-Series GT.

I meant what engine would they use? They already have a twin turbo V12 in the 7-series, although that engine is less powerful than the M5 engine, but only by a small margin. And they have the Alpina with 540 hp. M7 would be a better name, but they already have performance 7-series in a sense.

Why is there need for a S600 and S65AMG?

The S600 isn't really needed anymore since the bi-turbo V8 now makes about the same power as that old V12. The S600 is more about luxury and having a V12, and the dictators, I mean world leaders that buy it may not want the AMG body kits and stiffer suspension since. I would assume most S600 owners don't do the driving so maybe that is why they keep it.

It looks like the S600 may debut at the Detroit auto show, it will be 6-12 inches longer than the S550 or S65, so that will be what differentiates it.

Alpina B7 is built by an outside company, so BMW really isn't offering something to compete with the AMG S-Class cars straight from their own factory... As for the engine, I'm sure the BMW Motorsport folks could have some fun in playing with the TT V-12: I'm thinking 600hp-plus here...

They would need over 600 hp and over 700 lb-ft, that would make the M7 way more powerful than a Rolls-Royce, although not like Rolls-Royce owners are looking for performance. If they decide to go after the S65 AMG they better go big or go home.

What I quoted is the exact reason I think there is space for an M7.

While I love the idea of an AWD Sports car and would love to see a Cadillac V AWD. Right now I have to agree with those that say they need to go on a diet and loose some weight. Or at least get the HP/Torque up high enough to give the performance of a light 3000lb auto with the MPG of a decent mid size sedan. We have been stuck on teen MPG for a long time.

An M7 would be pretty damn awesome. The Audi S8 and Mercedes also have an extremely powerful S class. Even though the 7 series is a boat, who wouldn't want to see one with 550 hp+?
