March 15, 201412 yr A few years ago, Rolls-Royce introduced an all electric Phantom concept named the 102EX. The concept was shown to customers to gage reaction as to whether or not Rolls should not continue this project. Customers weren't interested and Rolls stopped work on the project. That doesn't mean Rolls isn't looking into other ways to be more environmentally-friendly. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös tells Auto Express the company is considering a plug-in hybrid powertrain for its vehicles in the next few years. “It will be essential in two years, maybe not from customer demand but through legal regulation on emissions,” said Müller-Ötvös. Most likely Rolls-Royce will borrow the technology from its parent company BMW who is currently working on a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the X5. Its unclear whether or not Rolls-Royce will put this powertrain in the Phantom or Ghost. Source: Auto Express William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. March 15, 201412 yr The Euro Union dictatorship approach to Auto's is going to force some companies / divisions to either die or run away to far more friendly countries. I understand that the emissions is an issue, but for a company like Rolls you would think they could find a better way than a plug-in hybrid. A volt type power train makes far more sense.
March 17, 201412 yr A Plug-in electric with on-board regenerator would be an excellent option for Rolls customers. Lots of low end torque long with silent running are a Rolls specialty.
March 18, 201412 yr Who is going to plug it in for them? That is just one more employee on the house staff.
