The Environmental Protection Agency released their annual report on industrywide fuel economy this week and says that 2013 model year vehicles achieved an average of 24.1 miles per gallon — up 0.5 mpg from the previous year and almost 5 mpg since 2004.

"We are thrilled to see that manufacturers continue to innovate and are bringing technologies to improve fuel economy online even faster than anticipated," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

Mazda was the top automaker in the report with a fleet average of 28.1 MPG, while Nissan was the leader in the full-line automakers with 26.8 MPG. The Detroit automakers made up the bottom with Ford at 22.2 MPG, GM at 22.0 MPG, and Fiat Chrysler at 20.2 MPG.

The EPA also notes in its report more fuel saving technologies are beginning to appear on vehicles. For example, the report notes that five percent of vehicles that aren't hybrids. This up from none back in 2009.

It is good Nissan is getting good reviews on fuel economy as, I have a nissan car and the fuel prices have gone up and down where I live in New Zealalnd and at the moment it is $197 a litre which has been a long time since it reached that amount. I remember in 2008 the prices were real high as $2.25 and higher sometimes and more improved cars will benefit people in the long run. I hope more research is done, and the companies have a look at the oil costs and how it is managed and priced for the consumers who buy the fuel for the cars.

$1.97! Its $1.88 here in Whangarei. We drove to Hamilton last week and the highest we saw was $1.95 and that was right off the motorway in Auckland. 

What were the prices for you at the highest?

In Romania the all-time record is about 7 RON/liter quite a while ago, which adjusted to $ with correct inflation adjustments would translate to about 9$ per gallon. Right now the gas prices are at their lowest, which is 5 RON/liter.

Yes, for now diesel is quite low too, but I doubt it's gonna stay that way. As the price lowers people will increase the demand more and more as they stop using the alternatives (cooking oil is quite popular here), and that's gonna destabilise things.
