Tesla Model X Photo Leak Shows Off Rear Falcon Wing Door

Featured Replies

An intrepid Redditor has snapped a photo of Tesla's Model X with its rear falcon wing door open, proof that engineers have cleared a major engineering hurdle.

The poster, likely a contract engineer, shared his photo on the Reddit's r/spotted 'subreddit.' The account was deleted shortly after but the image remains.

This news will allay fears that the Model X's ambitious rear doors would not see production. The 'falcon wing' door system is believed to have contributed to the crossover vehicle's delays, with engineers unsatisfied with the seal between the door and body.

In a later comment, the poster added "The interior is beautiful and the power is comparable to the Model S. Put it to the floor and the the standard 55MPH speed limit is gone before you know it."

The Palo Alto based electric automaker is expected to begin deliveries of its hotly anticipated crossover in September. Over 21,000 pre-orders for the vehicle have been placed.

Be interesting to see how those big doors work in the real world as most people have packed garages and not that much space when you see how far out the door sticks. I can see this being a problem for getting it open in a small garage.

It doesn't look to me (in the pic) it sticks out any further than a commonly-hinged door.

I just wonder if such a temporary status (the door when it's open) is going to bring any buyers in by itself.

I leave my truck doors open for long periods of time in some instances (up to 2 hours) if I'm working out of it/accessing stuff repeatedly. Overhead shade/cover might be useful in a work truck in that capacity, but in a passenger SUV, that's not the case.

Interesting spin on a popular growing segment.

Should sell well, maybe even better than the sedan

Is this style of door coming back into fashion?

It's quite an interesting draw, but for a family car is it all the practical? I'm thinking of parking in crowded parking lots where there are a lot of cars in close proximity. Will it make the opening of the doors a little difficult?

Either way I can see there will be a few embarresed children having to call for help to close the door because they cannot reach it!

^^^^ Its different.. and that will be the interest maker for many who buy it. GM.. are U seeing this??? At least one of the Lambdas should incorporate this in the design.. preferably as a real alternative to the minivan.. as the door opening like this kills the need for e sliding door

Is the door itself articulated? Can't tell from the pic for sure.

GMC had the best solution for this in '55, articulation that folded in on itself for minimal protrusion:
