Porsche News: Rumorpile: The Turbocharging of the Porsche Boxster/Cayman

Featured Replies

A new report from British publication Car says Porsche is going turbocharged with the refreshed Boxster and Cayman due sometime next year.

All engines will be of the flat-four variety ranging from 2.0L to 2.5L. Here is how the engine lineup will look,

  • Boxster/Cayman: 2.0L turbocharged flat-four producing 240 HP
  • Boxster S/Cayman S: 2.5L turbocharged flat-four producing 300 HP
  • Boxster GTS/Cayman GTS: 2.5L turbocharged flat-four producing 370 HP

The report goes on to say that the engine will use a single turbocharger and possibly have an 'e-boost' electric system to work while the turbo spools up.

Interesting, but understandable to meet Euro and US CAFE. Be interesting to see how they incorporate E-Boost.

240 is not much horsepower, even in a small car like this.  But I guess the Boxter often had a weak base model, I think the first ones only had like 210 hp back around year 2000.    But I guess this gives people more reason to pay for a 911.

240 hp in this car will still make a 0-60 time in 5.5 seconds.  This may not be 911 performance.  But it is an entry level car for people to aspire purchasing a better Porsche later.

"They shouldn't even offer a base model! They should start at 370 HP and go up from there! Bla-bla-bladdidy-blah-bla!"

The base Boxster has 265 hp now, odd that they would replace it with a less powerful engine.  The 300 hp is pretty good, this is a sub 3,000 lb car, so that is better than 10 lbs per horsepower.

^ Hmmm, not quite as good as the CT6 there. ;)

A CT6 with the 400 HP engine maybe. The Boxster is nearly 1,000 lbs less than the CT6 so not like it needs 400 HP, but buying a sports car I'd want more than 240, just like if buying a large luxury sedan I'd want more than 300.

I thought you had opened your eyes to lbs/HP…  :(
