R&T Tests Mustang GT, Camaro SS

Featured Replies

First, the background:

-they drive the Tail of the Dragon, so no messing around there,

-the Camaro had an automatic, the Mustang had the PP, and thus the stickshift.

And this is what they concluded: "If we're going to eat forest in either of these two, we're more likely to do so in the Mustang. Bowman can't believe that a car that felt so right last year is now 'loose and wallowy.'"

"After two days driving over the relief left behind by the Great Buzzard, there's no doubt the Camaro, with its Cadillac platform and Corvette engine, is the thoroughbred of its class. We can't believe it. The Camaro is almost too composed. The balance is sublime. It's refined and exciting. Has this once fat lout of a car become a bona fide sports car? Did that just happen? It happened."

I'm waiting for a legit comparison of the Camaro SS and GT350 (non-R). The GT is just not at the same level, too much carryover from 2011. You can't just add an IRS and expect a fresh face to put you on top in the long run. Frankly by selling a $50k GT350 that runs even with a $37k Camaro, Ford has established a painfully low performance ceiling on the Mustang GT for near-future development.

Motor Authority posted a video comparing the two (SS and GT350)... but stopped short of actually having them duke it out in performance tests or lap times. It was essentially a beauty reel of the two cars with some jackass spouting brochure materials. They didn't even pick one over the other.

This will always be a leapfrog event. I am surprised they did not have the Challenger there also.

That SS continues to impress and make itself worthy of the higher sticker price. The facts do not lie at this point.

It's kind of ridiculous, really. Shave off the cash and weight of the sunroof and automatic transmission and it's dominance is beyond dispute. And after sitting in one a coupla days ago I concur with their take on the interior.

I just think the HR-V is a nicer product than the Juke.  I just wish a manual transmission were available with the AWD.

The Camaro beat it in every performance metric except 60-0.. and then picks that back up in an 80-0 press. I love this car. Gotta get out and drive one.

And Sorry.. while I absolutely love the Mustang's ass.. I think this Camaro is better looking in every other aspect

When production allows it I'd say that will happen. For now I'll just shake my head about a slushbox Camaro smoking a Performance Package Mustang at Tail of the Dragon.
