Squealing tires

Featured Replies

I've noticed in the parking garage of the new building I live in, that I squeal my tires almost every time I turn a corner. The floors are concrete. I'm not going fast enough to actually slide the tires, probably about 10 mph. They're tight 90 deg corners, so I probably have to turn the wheel about 270 deg to make them. Right at the point where I have the wheel turned the most, just before I start unwinding it to go straight again, I will hear a squeak from the tires, I believe the outside one. I'm not giving it any gas in these corners, and I'm usually either just above idle in 1st or idling in 2nd, depending on how fast I'm driving that day.

I have a 2005 Cobalt manual, with 27000 km, and the original tires have lots of tread still, and have been rotated.

Is this normal or is there something wrong?

It's normal that this happens in parking garages, usually because the concrete is smooth

Um... yeah, last time I checked squealing tires weren't a big problem.

Well... I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wearing my tires unnecessarily.

Unlike Sly, I dislike going to the tire store. Especially when I don't even get any burnouts out of the deal... :P

what happens is I think that your tires have to much grip and are bending a tire inward from the stress of a corner but the strees over comes the grip causeing the tire to slip causeing a little squeal. Its not bad at all.
