DETROIT —

General Motors Corp. announced plans Friday for the H1, which is the foundation for the automaker's Hummer brand. Based on the military's Humvee, the vehicle put on the road since 1992 defined the Hummer name.

"It's a reflection of where we're going with the Hummer brand," Hummer general manager Martin Walsh said of the decision. "The Hummer DNA still resides in the Humvee. ... It will always be the core from where we come."

There needs a successor. No question. Hummer needs an H1 flagship vehicle. Maybe Cadillac & Hummer can share in the costs to come up with something that can be used by both and still be unique. It would allow Cadillac to have a Flagship SUV that's not shared with Chevy or GMC. Maybe that platform could then provide the next gen Escalade & H2 as well.

Well, I have to agree with you. Hummer needs a flagship "big-wig" vehicle. Plus, I think Hummer's top vehicle should not be affiliated with the military in any way. Now, I AM NOT GETTING POLITICAL, but seeing all of the news on the military H1 vehicles getting blown to bits by bombs does not make a good advertisment for the civilian version. Now, I know that the average civilian dosen't face life and death every day, but all the negative news does affect the publics opinion on Hummer. Hummer needs a rugged, high class vehicle that will still stay true to the Hummer name. Anyone up for a SUV above the Escalade for Cadillac?

I'd rather see something unique for a Hummer H1 replacement.

Military HumVees are not getting blown up because of how they are built, but because of what they are being blown up by. Nothing on pneumatic tires would survive whatever is blowing them up. On the image: the military-spec lineage far outweighs any miniscule negativity that warfare reporting is having.

And I also disagree about an H1 replacement. I don't think the fact that the H1 exists has much sales bearing on the H2 & H3, to the extent that a replacement is necessarily necessary. But if so, there;s no way in hell there should be a Cadillac version of it.

True'nuff...I'm sure if they put a chrome Hummer grille on the 'Vette or Aveo, they would sell well also...

the Hummer brand is a nothing but a faux-macho BS image, no real substance, IMHO...

the H1 was an antiquated military truck that made no sense as a civilian street vehicle...

NO. Hummer's best (and most useful) would be to take Jeep head on...

As for the whole "Hummer Kodiak" concept, I'd say the platform could be used for a replacement...

The H1 is the soul of the Hummer brand and image. Hopefully a replacement is coming soon.
