General Motors says it will suspend the third shift at two car factories early next year because American consumers are shifting from cars to SUVs and trucks.

The company says the shifts will be idled at factories in Lordstown, Ohio, near Cleveland and in Lansing, Michigan. The Lordstown plant makes the Chevrolet Cruze compact car, while the Lansing Grand River factory makes the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car and the Cadillac ATS and CTS luxury cars.

Makes sense.

I don't mind idling a plant or slowing production or whatever you have to do to correct your supply/demand. Laying off.. sucks. At least they know early enough to not overspend on the holidays. Hopefully the families will plan accordingly and will be back to work in only a few weeks or so.

I'm sure we'll read about how GM's effort is " Excellence of Execution " and superior to Ford.

Yawn, no big deal, this is an expected part of reality for working an assembly line and especially the 3rd shift line. No job for life promise.

Talk about cars, not people.  Final warning.... there should be points handed out for a number of posts thus far.

Back to cars...i wonder with a glut of inventory of both Camaros and Msutangs as of late if the market will at some point take a sharp turn away from pony cars. I have 5 children, aged 15 to 26, and know personally many of there friends.

There is very little love for pony cars among the younger set methinks.  I could be wrong though. Would love everyone's input on this.

The people coming of driving age and in their very early 20s can't afford a new Mustang or Camaro.

The people in their late 20s to late 30s who can now afford such cars came into driving age just as the Camaro and Firebird were dying and the Mustang was still predominantly powered by a 4.0 from the Ranger, the 5pointSlow or a kinda Meh 4.6... and in all of the above cases with terrible interiors and build quality.... these people were the ones that got their mom's used Civic and "riced" it out.  They have no particular fond memories for the F-Bodies or the Mustang and generally view them as junk even though that is clearly not the case these days.

People in their mid-30s to late 50s have the most purchasing power, but they are in their primary child rearing years and thus head straight for the Explorers and Traverses without giving RWD sports cars a second thought.

People in their late 50s and above are generally looking for something with more prestige than a Camaro or Mustang, or their rheumatism doesn't allow them to sit in a car so low to the ground. Though with the kids gone and the house paid off, they are in a better position to afford one.

The demographics for these cars is not trending positive.

As much as I dearly love both of them there is a real part of me that would like to see both of them killed off with something else. Even my wife who is not a car person despises the thought of owning one at the moment.

Not that the Shelby Gt 350 R isn't a cool car....but....yeah...would love to see something else.
