The Volkswagen emblem is easily one of the most recognizable emblems in the auto world, next to Chevrolet's bowtie and Mercedes-Benz's three-pointed star. But the German automaker is planning to make some tweaks for a new future.

At a press briefing in Berlin, Volkswagen's chief marketing officer Jochen Sengpiehl said the new logo would debut next year. Details about what the emblem will look like are being kept close to the chest, but Sengpiehl did say it would be updated to look good on their vehicles and smartphone screens.

“The brand is not in good shape compared to previous years,” as the marque lost some of its emotional appeal by trying to be “too German. It’s not only because of the diesel scandal,” said Sengpiehl.

The goal is to try to and make Volkswagen more approachable and less stiff consumers and "highlight innovations to justify a higher price tag" on their vehicles.

Sengpiehl is also planning to change up the company's marketing. To this end, Volkswagen is inviting advertising agencies to pitch ideas in the coming months. Volkswagen is also planning on setting up 'marketing hubs' in key markets that will tailor messages to their respective markets.

New modern logo that is not Bland, Generic German is a Good thing.

New Marketing that actually is regional focused, what a concept! ?

One would have thought they would have clued into this 20 years ago when they were so bland. VW could have done so much more in the US but has always been a wallflower.

Time for a 21st century makeover!

Bad idea.  Terrible, in fact.

Well, let's see. We gots an 'L', we gots an 'A', we gots a 'B', we gots two 'T's and two 'H's, we gots an 'M' and a 'double M', we gots a 'double R'...

What's that spell???

UNIMAGINATIVE!

So there's probably plenty of boring room for a 'V'.

If they don't this could be the start of a slow death. Sales are already showing that due to Dieselgate!

Silly.  Sales have been up, even without the multitude of benefits of the TDi engine.  "Dieselgate" is purely political.  This electric initiative will contribute to a quicker "slow death" than what was done to them on the diesel front.

This just smells of desperation.  There is no point in changing the badge--it's simple, clean and iconic as it is.

I think this is a stupid idea as well. Plus, they mentioned adding color?!?  F that. That's what I DONT like about Ford and Chevy logos is the color never matches the vehicle. They're more eye sores than anything else.

I like the color on the Ford and Chevy logos--same with Pontiac, Buick, Ferrari, etc. It would be madness for the badge color the match the vehicle color, IMO.

Do not forget the awesome multi colored Cadillac Badge! :D

BMW has Color and Mercedes-benz used to have a blue, black and red version of their logo. So why is color bad for VW when they also used to have a blue, black or red version depending on which auto you bought.

From their R-Line

Blue or black background was very common for a long time on all the rest of the auto's other than the R-Line.

It's fine for the logo to have color but I want a "colorless" one on my vehicles.

Perfect example would be the current VW logo. The blue like dfelt shows and then they put a colorless one on the vehicles. Perfect.

Hmm not sure if it is worth the risk, current one is fine.  I'm iffy on colours in Logos.  Kia used to have colour..
