Montreal and Laval have warded New Flyer of America a contract for 40 of the forty-foot battery electric Xcelsior buses. This contract is for 10 buses for STL and 30 buses for STM, together making this the largest battery bus procurement to date. This starts the rapid change over that these mass transit agencies have put in place to move to all electric buses only with STL buying only electric starting in 2023 and STM buying only electric starting in 2025 to replace retiring diesel and hybrid buses.

STM provides public transportation in Montreal, Quebec and is the third most heavily used public transportation in North America. STL provides public transportation in Laval, Quebec. STM and STL choose to go with the 466 kWh battery pack option out of their 100 kWh to 818 kWh batteries. These buses have a leading edge sophisticated battery management system, Direct drive no transmission, regenerative braking and improved traction via the electric awd system. This powertrain choice reduces cost, weight, maintenance and propulsion complexity.

The 466 kWh battery pack is good for 160 miles plus range allowing most buses to complete 2 runs of the average 80 mile bus route before fast charging the bus again.

These buses will bring a ultra quiet clean smelling riding experience to the population of Quebec.
