June 2, 200619 yr What car made in the 1990s came with a transverse mounted motor with FWD and yet there was a high performance variant with a longitudinaly mounted motor that sent most of its power to the rear wheels?
June 2, 200619 yr In the 1990s? In THIS decade, there was the MG ZT/Rover 75 which sent all of its power to the front wheels in the regular versions and all of its power to the rear wheels in the V8 versions.
June 2, 200619 yr Author You're closer than you think... also there is a connection between this car and a 1970s era compact Chevrolet.
June 2, 200619 yr Author Great guess but no cigar.... the Clio has a transverse mounted motor in both FWD & RWD configurations. This car has a tuner version that comes with a motor mounted lenghtwise in the chassis.
June 2, 200619 yr Oh, if we're talking "tuner" versions the Ford Focus was offered that way as well. But in the 1990s, the Chevrolet S10 was offered with in RWD/4WD configurations and also transverse/FWD configurations. But neither of these are what you're going for.
June 2, 200619 yr Author I forgot about the 'lectric S10s and I know they make Focus 4.6 GT conversions btu that's strictly aftermarket. This car was made by company "A" and then conversions were made and transformed by company "B" and sold as new under both brands' names. Think RUF Porsche... similar kind of "tuner". Like I said it's not GM but it has a link to a little Chevy that was made in the 1970s.
June 3, 200619 yr Author C'mon... this is a no-brainer. Compact Chevrolet car from the 1970s... then years later this "tuner" made this car in question but for rival brand.
June 3, 200619 yr So some tuner company converted a vehicle related to a longitudinally-engined Chevrolet (since no Chevrolet models in the 1970s had transverse engines) to a transverse setup and detuned it (since the longitudinally-engined vehicle in your question was the "high performance" version)?
June 4, 200619 yr Because of the Cosworth Twin-Cam Vegas of the mid-70's? That's really reaching when you say there's a link, pal. Not like I would have guessed it in a million years anyways
June 4, 200619 yr Author The answer is the Ford Cosworth. The Rally Car Legend. But even the half-assed Cosworth RS2000 had a transverse mounted motor. I mean the REAL Cosworth Escort. One of the best Ford ever made and one with an amazing track record. These little AWD Winged wonders go like a Cheetah that drank a gallon of coffee. http://www.wrc-cosworth.org/pics/pics1/Coche2.jpg http://moto.wp.pl/gid,8102151,img,8102159,...?T%5Bpage%5D=11 The connection was the 1970s Cosworth Vegas and therfore Cosworth was the missing link. Edited June 4, 200619 yr by Sixty8panther
June 5, 200619 yr Author I've never heard of either of those vehicles.. The Cosworth Escort was the WRX - STi of the ealry 1990s, kicking ass & taking names. Like the WRX the Cosworth Escort was purpose built to battle in the World Rally Championship. It's trully one of the most amazing pieces of automotive craftsmanship in that it can hold its own on a paved circuit or on a mud-sand-snow covered mountain path in New Zeland. I thought since it's featured in Gran Turismo 2 some of you video-game-era kids might know it well from that game alone.
June 5, 200619 yr I've never heard of either of those vehicles..SixtyEight:There was a joke that Billy Crystal used to tell about feeling old. He said that his kid was asking if Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings. I feel that way, but I'd have to explain who Wings...AND Paul McCartney....is.
June 5, 200619 yr Author Well, the irony is that I have the taste of a 110 year old guy but I'm only 27. I feel young but I don't feel like I belong in my generation. I wish I had been born in the late 40s with the rest of the baby boomer generation. Used V16 Cadillacs, COPO Camaros & '59 Buicks would have been a lot more attainable. If I end up buying the 1964 Oldsmobile I keep talking about then I will own a car whose original owner would be 110 years old if he were alive today. That being said a 1990s era Cosworth Escort is pretty darn new, not just by my standards.
June 7, 200619 yr There was a fwd GM car in the '90s that was converted to a longitudinal rwd setup, but it was busted by a journalist.
June 7, 200619 yr Author You lost me Griffon. Hudson: What part of the country are you in? If you're anywhere in N.E. I'll stop by next time one of my crazy roadtrips. WMJ: Don't say F-biased-AWD or I'll kick your butt.
June 8, 200619 yr Hudson: What part of the country are you in? If you're anywhere in N.E. I'll stop by next time one of my crazy roadtrips. Eastern Pennsylvania. Let me know the next time you're roadtrippin'.
June 8, 200619 yr Author Eastern Pennsylvania. Let me know the next time you're roadtrippin'. Awsome! I'm defiantely going out there at some point this year. GM1, Balthazar, Camino, Black&Blue, OCNBLU and others live in that general area.
