I cannot connect. I always get:

[22:05] Connecting...
[22:05] Logging in...
[22:05] Please wait while we process your connection.
[22:07] Error : Closing Link: [[email protected]] (Ping timeout)
[22:07] Disconnected from irc1.us.open-ircnet.net

Do you have a firewall up? If you do you may need to allow the connection.

I've never figured out how to get past my firewall... but I can get on regular IRC servers just fine.

I think a normal IRC room would be better. People could just idle there all the time. It can be a hassle, but it's worth it in my opinion.

If it would be feasable, could we have a chat room that could be logged into from an external client? I never seem to have any luck with in-browser chat rooms.

I'd be willing to buy a subscription for that.

I found our chat feature, but despite the fact that we used to have it, it's disabled currently, and I need Z to help out with that. But yeah, the built in chat wasn't that great, so maybe an external on would be something to look into.

In the interim...

This could be a stopgap.

I think I might make an IRC channel on FreeNode. Anyone up for this?

Using an IRC network would be cool, but does FreeNode have a Java applet for newbie users so they can get in easy? Or will people need to get use a client like mIRC or Mibbit?

I've never had any luck at all with Java IRC clients, so I don't know if one would work to access Freenode. But I could provide instructions for getting on using a traditional client.

I think C&G Chat was an IRC client that used Java, and we all know how well that worked. I use mIRC myself for gaming servers, but Chatzilla for FireFox users is nice and simple, so perhaps that'd be one for people who want to chat, but don't want too much hassle.
