Los Angeles - The Mazda CX-30 originally debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in March of 2019.  Now Mazda is bringing it to the Los Angeles for U.S. consumption.  The CX-30 is the latest vehicle on Mazda's new generation of vehicles that are getting complete makeovers to feel more luxurious in spite of their price.  Slotting between the tiny CX-3 and compact CX-5, the CX-30 takes on a Goldilocks approach of not-too-big not-too-small.  It has more of a coupe like roofline than the other two as well.

Mazda paid special attention to the interior with a comfortable and luxurious cabin.  Engineers focused on reducing noise, harshness, and vibration to create a serene space for driver and passengers. Speakers of the sound system were repositioned in order to improves sound and reduce areas where outside sounds could intrude into the cabin. 

Mazda is debuting their connected services on the CX-30 with the MyMazda app.  The app can handle remote starting, locking and unlocking the doors, or even activate the hazard lights. Vehicle status such as oil life, fuel level, and tire pressure can be monitored from the app as well. The app will notify owners of important vehicle alerts or recalls. Emergency services such as towing or 911 can be contacted through the system as well. 

While European customers get a choice of engines, the U.S. spec CX-30 will only come with a single engine option; the Skyactiv 2.5 liter 4-cylinder that produces 186 horsepower, a best in class figure for a standard engine, and 186 lb.-ft of torque. 

There will be four trims available, base, Select, Preferred, and Premium. Base price starts at $21,900 for the front wheel drive model and $23,300 for the base AWD model.

Relatively high cladding to paint ratio on this bugger.

 

Oh good, another crossover coupe thing.  Makes total sense that the model between 3 and 5 is the 30, and not the CX-4. Hopefully they come up with a CX-60 to slot above the CX-5.

If the Buick Cross TourX gets bad press due to the heavy cladding then this is a failure at autoshow release. That looks really tacky! ?

First time I've seen a Mazda in red.  Gotta say... it is kinda low-slung for a CUV, and the cladding has risen like high tide in the La Brea Tar Pits.

not surprising they make the 2.5 standard. rest of the world got the D and will soon have the X in more than 1 model. if the first x variant here is a 2.5L or a 6cyl... w/e.

the cx-3 is based on the 2, which here is the toyota yaris...? while not bad for those of smaller needs and stature, this will be for those that want a little more thrill, but still don't need something big.

Interesting they did go with a 2.5 4cyl instead of a 1.x 3 cyl or 1.5 4cyl like others in this segment.

The cladding doesn't look bad on a dark color...on a white one it wouldn't look good.  I like the front 3/4 view here.

Still looks as an after thought of we fucked up the wheel wells, how do we fix it? I know cover it in lots of Plastic. ?

Cladding + ‘X’ in the name says CUV in all markets.

The cladding is most certainly too much. If they cut it down by 30-50% it would look much cleaner/better.

Mazda has the Build & Price pages up on their site.  The CX-30 has the very same, very short list of available exterior colors they've had for many...long... years.

They should make a Miata MX-5 X-Cross, 2 seat convertible crossover.  

And a rotary engine in the Miata crossover also.

Purely now after seeing tv ads for these, the lumpy dumpy CX-5 is for OK BOOMERS and this sleek CX-30 is for the younger set and those that don't like the slab sided, compatively piggish look of  the CX-5.  Neither of the two groups wanting the weird Mazda3 hatch.

Wonder if they will amp the cladding up to this level when the new CX5 and 9 show up within a few years.  Hopefully they both grow some inches given how close this is to the CX5.

 

 

We have about half a dozen of these right now.  Honestly they seem very nearly as claustrophobic as the CX-3.  You sit low, with a high tub around you and very limited visibility out the back.  They are still too much car, not enough utility, imo.  I do like the black and blue interior color scheme on the lower trims though.

It's certainly not "heavy" - it's not a subaru.
