Cascada trunk taillights.  Because the weird decklid design includes the taillights, they added redundant lights to use when driving w/ the decklid open.   I remember noticing them at a auto show a couple years ago...r

Correct of course. Federal law prohibits rear lighting that's only on a moving panel (trunklid).

Some Audi SUVs are like that also.

This is a neat thing here. I knew they needed to be on a fixed panel but I've never seen this workaround for that. 

I seem to recall some vehicle had a decklid with openings around the taillights so when it was open the taillights were in a fixed position.  Like how the headlights are on a modern Mini.   But I don't recall what model it was.

Wonder if they turn on when the lid is closed so both sets work or if there is a switch to turn them off. ?

DOT. Think it's mainly for roadside safety. Trunk lid up getting spare tire out etc...
