I believe that is how many they have added to the total since the beginning of August.....so that number in the () would be how many recalls in the moth of August.

Agreed. We need to know:

Was it a few thousand or a few tens of thousands of vehicles recalled (as is the case with the Acura TSX) or a few hundred thousand, even millions (like the recent Ford truck recall)?

Using those same two examples, was the recall for a relatively minor issue, like taillights burning out too fast (Acura), or was it for a big issue, like vehicles catching on fire (Ford)?

Furthermore: What good does it do to point and laugh at the lack of progress in stopping recalls from Japan, when Chevy, GMC and Ford still top the list? This is nothing to celebrate about. It means the Big 3 have to try better to build regulation-compliant vehicles from launch, rather than gradually repairing them (at great cost to the automaker, I'm sure... think of all the replacement parts they have to make and then give away!) as they age.

Why dont you be fair, Honda has vehicle fires too. With this example, you are apparently trying to make the Japanese recalls seem minor compared to the domestics.

As Flybrian has stated the posted data that started this thread is meaningless without production, and the issue for the recall. Most recalls are not influenced by the government and almost all are always voluntary and for a small population of vehicles.

Manufacturers have been recalling vehicles way before the feds have been counting them.

Recalls have little to do with regulation-compliance but more to do with tort concerns and customer satisfaction that MIGHT have a POTENTIAL negative impact on safety which is up to the discretion of the OEM.

Counting recalls is just nonsense. It shows nothing.

also it may demonstrate that GM is more apt to fix a problem as a whole then Toyota is... meaning if there is a problem GM already has a bad rep so why not welcome everyone to getting it fixed, where as toyota may avoid the recall and warantee 3million motors...

Yeah, just ask the owners of the Lexus ES/Camry that didn't get the non-responsive accelleration corrected in an actual recall, as Toyota used a "service bulletin" to try to fix them. Service bulletin should be used for silly problems, not something like that. Not sure if this was ever truely recalled.

(Make sure you read comments of all the ES.Camry owners that did not get satisfactory dealer response and swear off owning another Toyota).

It does show that GM is slowing down on their recalls as they get into their newer products, as toyota and honda seem to have more recalls with their newer products.

I was using the TSX as a friggin' example.
