Driving on my way home this afternoon from work I had the UNpleasure of seeing a pretty bad accident. Police and rescue personnel had not responded yet, however; being a helper on a few friends Volunteer Fire Depts, I responded as best I could. Apparently, a guy driving a relatively new Civic wasn't paying a large amount of attention to what he was doing, changed lanes without looking, ran sidelong into a Kenworth, got turned in front of it, Kenworth driver slammed onto his brakes, Toyota Sequoia driver slammed into the back of the Kenworth's trailer (happened to be hauling logs), then another Honda, this one an Accord ran into the back of the Toyota....after that things seemed to settle down a little, the accident accordianed pretty well and everyone was able to evade after that, a couple of smaller fender benders of course happened too, but they weren't near as bad as this one. Anyway, I hauled over to the side of the road, and immediately ran to the nearest vehicle to me, the Sequoia.

Lady inside was all right, minor cuts and bruises, some burns from the airbag deployment, a log went through the passenger's side of the windshield and smacked the passengerside headrest. Her two 5-year olds in the back seat seemed all right, crying and bruised from the car seat restraints but unhurt. Guy in the Accord was pretty pissed that it happened but he was fine other than bruises. However, the guy in the Civic wasn't. He was trapped in the car and I couldn't do anything to help him except keep him calm and talking to me.

Paramedics and police arrived on the scene about ten minutes later. I did the best I could but the guy in the Civic had lost consciousness by the time they arrived. The trucker was all right, but him and his wife (riding with him) were pretty shaken up. Apparently in their twelve years of driving, not a single wreck until now.....

Yikes...

This reminds me... I got to see a Jeep Grand Cherokee (older one) swipe the rear end of a 4Runner. The lady in the 4R was trying to back out of the parking spot, slowly, while the guy in the GC wasn't paying attention... until the last minute when he slammed on his brakes and tried to swerve.. but it was too late.

Yeah, parking lot accidents always happen, however this one was at about 65-80 miles per hour, a little different I guess.

Well.. this was on Main St. and the guy was going about 30...

Ahhh "that" kind of parking lot accident,yeah those can be pretty hair raising.

Them Jeep drivers! Same damn thing happened to me.. so replace the 4Runner with my car and that's what happened two winters ago. Oh, and the cop said I was at fault.

Sad and tragic for sure.

It's in the nature of the road, but it never gets any easier when it happens. Having served on the volunteer fire department for a time, I've dealt with enough - requiring the usual councelling afterward. My experiences were nothing compared to the First Response Unit, and the crew manning the jaws of life and paramedic hauler.

I hope your memories aren't causing you any grief. I still have issues with a particular incident when a male occupant of an SUV was a decap. victim. It's rather disturbing when I never saw the face of the person; yet, my mind still forces me to wonder what he actually looked like. I don't get nightmares, but the images are just annoying as all hell.

It doesn't really bother me, call me cold, but I've been able to disconnect myself from being on the scene of an accident after being on the scene of them so many times before (I guess I am cold-hearted), but I haven't lost any sleep over it, from what I know the dumbass that caused the whole thing has a cranial fracture and is still in the hospital..

This happened a few days ago...

A couple blocks down from my house some reckless kid was speeding incredibly fast down a residential road. He had to be going at least ninety, when he smashed through the brick wall of some one's house and went out the other side. Police said he looked and seemed stable and was not under the influence of anything(I think differently). The family in the house was unharmed, because they were all upstairs on the second level. The kid driving the car walked away with bruises.
