We lost my Dad this morning
I'm sorry about your father (I just read this). Mourn your loss, and revel in the time you had together. My dad died when I was 16 and I still have a memory of me watching a scary movie when I was about 9 with my dad, hiding in his jacket. I can still smell the scent of Harris Tweed, Dunhill Golden Cavendish and Kolnisch Juchten. As time passes, those memories become wistful, and comforting.

Low Tech me - won an IPOD Nano
enjoy your iPod- I've had a couple since they were introduced and they are great. I get bookd on CD out of the library and listen to them on the bus on the way to work, in addition to music. The podcasts are fun too.

I'm really sorry to read that. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Rolls-Royce Phantom
I'm not too fond of the new Rolls. They took the whole retro-futurist thing too literally, using the same proportions of the Rolls' of the 40's and 50's. While those were beautiful cars, they weren't even considered modern looking then, let alone now. It would be like having a DTS with big honking '59 fins on it or a Lucerne with a "fashion-aire dynastar" grille...

Help!
If I remember correctly, it was in '57 and they were called "Golden Rocket Eighty-Eight" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 88 model. But that's from an article I read about 15 years ago.

Greenpeace Anti-SUV Commercial...
I remember those days, my town was on a river that you'd have to be taken to the hopital and decontaminated if you fell in. At that time, there were rivers in the Midwest that caught fire. Yes you read that right, caught fire. There's a picture from the 50's taken from the corner I now work on in LA of City Hall across the street- only the two first stories are barely visible in the smog. I shudder to think about people actually having to have breathed that, and there are still days here that it's not the best air. Having written that, I wish that some groups could come across as less strident and self righteous about some of this. Nobody wants to be told they are evil for buying an SUV, and frankly when it comes down to it, your Prius in only raping the environment incrementally less than that Escalade.

I dont like your ringtone
One friend: sound effect of UFO flying from the old TV show "UFO" Another friend: theme from "the Avengers" Regular ringer: theme from "UFO" This way I always know it's my phone ringing and if it's one of the tow friends I speak to the most. Esp. useful in the car (I wear a headset). The cell is useful for the no long distance and "In" minutes.

AHHHHH!!!!!!! Scary Cars! Booo!
a taxi-cab yellow Saturn Sky (you don't see a lot of them here yet) at the corner of Santa Monica and Palm in BH. The young, pretty girl driving it popped out at the light to put the top up (we were having sprinkles) proving that you can do so at the length of a stoplight. The Miata retrictible. I hate to say it, but this is serious competition not only to the Solstice/Sky, but the a lot of other cars- Z-4 and even SLK. 25k for a retractible hardtop? I'm half tempted myself...even though it looks a bit with the top up like a hot guy wearing that Yarmulke his aunt Yetta crocheted for him. (I find it interesting that Mazda had to put Edmunds review liking the Miata over the Solstice on the homepage. Feeling the heat Mazda?) Can't GM do something with to adapt the top from the SSR? Something along the same idea?

NYC mulls ban on trans fats in eateries
I've been in restaurants in New York where I would not be surprised to get rabies from the food. The trans-fat issue seems a lot smaller than the cleanliness one. Another feel-good "nanny me" law; there are no second-hand trans fats and no geese are force fed them. Make a law to disclose them by all means, but lets get over it otherwise. Besides, like that scene in the movie "Sleeper", years from now they'll reverse themselves yet again and declare that transfats are great for you, as is smoking and drinking.

The Smoking Crowd - at work or school
The only thing I miss about smoking is that break- where else in the known universe can you take 10 minutes out of each working hour to go off and feed your drug addiction? I wish I could take 10 minutes out of every work hour just because I'm sick of working.

California suing GM, Ford, Toyota, three others
As a California Democrat, I can only laugh and type "what he said". And as a California Democrat car owner who takes the bus to work, I have to say to Lockyer, unless you are taking the bus too, then take your grandstanding election-year political bul^&it and stick it the same place I suggest the right-wing whackos stick theirs. You know what? Stick it there even if you do take the bus. Not only should you commute shank's mare, if you want to be this level of self righteous a$$hole, you'd better be pulling commuters around Sacramento on a rickshaw.

Intership update
I don't necessarily agree with that, but he should do whatever it takes to get in the door somewhere in his field. It's to be hoped that once he's proven himself, he can start to pick and choose where he wants to work.

How many wash their own vehicle?
I wash the Honda when I realise that it's beige rather than fuschia (oh pardon me, "Camellia Red Metallic"). I take it to a place in West Hollywood that I can wash it for two dollars. It's about as important as emptying the toaster of crumbs- maintenance, not love.
