GM News: Class-Action Lawsuit Alleges GM's Heavy Duty Trucks Cheated in Emission Tests
Even though diesel trucks do not suffer this rolling coal problem unless heavily modified, I find this rolling coal problem highly noxious and annoying. Why anyone would essentially sabotage emissions equipment just to anger Prius owners is beyond me. It is fundamentally childish and is terrible for all concerned. As for the class action lawsuit, I do not think that it has real merit. It is one thing for the EPA to enforce existing laws; it is quite another to sue GM when the EPA is busy trying to enforce the laws we currently have. Now, if the EPA and CARB did NOTHING about this, then a class action suit can and should go forward. This feels like a pile-on to me.

Wow. A ten-speed automatic.. . . . . with Cadillac and Buick having 8AT in their vehicles. GM has come A LONG WAY from the 4T65E transmission in my 2008 Lucerne. Then again, are there ANY GM vehicles with a 6AT left?

Fiat News: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Gets Served By the Justice Department
While this is a serious problem, that leads me to this question. Why can't FCA build and sell fuel-efficient vehicles that people will actually buy? I still see quite a few compacts and fewer subcompacts on the roads down here, but most of them are Civics, Corollas, Sentras, a few Yarises and Fits, with several Cruzes on the road too. Very few Fiat 500s around here. Every time I see an FCA vehicle, it is a 300/Charger, a RAM pickup truck, or a minivan. Yes, gas prices here are around $2.25 for regular, but still nobody wants a small FCA vehicle while the competition is doing a lot better. Sergio et. al. are really screwing the pooch here.

You might be hoping against hope on that one. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram have been on borrowed time ever since Bob Eaton sold the former Chrysler Corporation to Daimler-Benz in 1998. I personally doubt anyone cares about the US nameplates that are FCA executives these days. Sergio has always believed that FIAT, not Chrysler, is the one that he needs to serve and save if necessary. As for the issue at hand, I am glad that they are actually trying to address this issue before they fall into VW's purgatory.

On a serious note: Does FCA build ANYTHING that people actually want to buy anymore? From where I sit, there are better alternatives to nearly every single model FCA has on sale AND FCA has an empty pipeline for new vehicles. Sergio is totally blowing this because there is no real reason anyone should buy an FCA vehicle, especially when Ford and General Motors have better vehicles at all levels. Admit it: FCA is simply not competitive anymore.. . . . in the last decade if ever.

FCA should be sued if/when they break the law. Of course, FCA could stop cheating and follow the rules, but that is not Sergio's way apparently.

GM News: General Motors To Stop Selling In India, Cease Operations In South Africa
So GM will be in North America, China, parts of South America, and whatever export markets actually make $$$$ for GM. OK. Some places are difficult if not hostile markets for GM for one reason or another, so leaving them makes a lot of sense. Perhaps GM will move to building cars in NA, China/S Korea and have everyone else receive cars as imports rather than build factories there. Seems to be a better idea anyway.

Oops. Overpromising then underdelivering are never the right things to do. I am sure they will figure all of this out, but car building is actually hard to do. How Musk and Tesla deal with this kind of adversity will tell us whether Tesla itself will be truly viable or ends up more like a passing fad.

Industry News: Catch-22: More Safety Technologies Causing Insurance Companies To Total Vehicles
That leads me to this question: if you wish to stop raising safety standards because you believe that leads to a price problem, where should we set car safety standards? Now, or 2005, or 1990, or 1975? Also, we as a society have done relatively little to improve driver safety education over the last 25 years or so. How do we address that?
