Found it: driver's side view mirrors were federally mandated for 1968. Fed laws usually ignore model years and are set via calendar dates. "1968" very likely means Jan 1 1968, which gives the owner of a '68 some wiggle room to defend himself depending on his vehicle's manufacture date. The owner of the Foose '70 is SOL. LAW: All 1968 and newer vehicles require an adjustable driver's side view mirror. All 1970 and newer vehicles require an adjustable interior (rearview) mirror. All 1991 and newer vehicles require a 'day/night' rearview.

My take: Foose is removing them because they were not federally mandated in '70. And because he's Foose. I looked for 25 minutes last night on the web, trying in vain to find a reference to when sideviews were federally mandated. I can tell you via my '70 Cadillac sales brochure that a passenger side view was optional on all models except the Series 75, and the standard driver's side mirror was remote-controlled. Doesn't tell us much. I agree that mirrors are a valuable safety item, but you'd think I could find something online about them if they were that monsterously important. In my regular cab pick-up with dual side views, I use all 3 mirrors AND I shoot a glance over my shoulder when changing lanes (there's no blind spots in the human eyeball/glance). Takes less than a second. I've done this for years ever since I nearly sideswiped someone because I ONLY relied on my mirrors to merge. But I've also driven vehicles with no rear view. My '64 Cat had a fender-mounted sideview: it was like peeking thru a keyhole from 2 feet away. Like anything- you can get used to it. My '40 Ford truck (which I haven't driven yet since buying it) has zero mirrors (and no turn signals!!)- should be fun! I am considering adding a rearview, but since my eye is 7 feet in the air in it and it only does 50 MPH, maybe I'll just let everyone else watch out for me. ;) I'll keep poking around for the federal statute....

I do not believe it is possible to weld aluminum to steel and have it even remotely resemble something with structural integrity.

This is saab's forte'. For a number of years they changed the brake hardware fastener heads every year or two, to the point of inventing their own 'slot' designs, forcing their own brand mechanics to purchase new sets of tools to fix them. Being able to work on the car you overpaid for and own seems like an inalienable right to me. I have no interest in ever buying an 'owner-hostile' vehicle... :angry:

I've owned 19 vehicles, 1 of which was brand new. In fact, the average model year of all the vehicles I've owned is currently 1963. For about 5 years running I bought 2 vehicles per year; slowed way down since then. I'm only a few years behind you in age.

When were cars required by federal law to have sideviews (or at least driver's side)?? It's a relatively 'lesser' safety device- may not have been mandated until the early '70s. I know passenger-side sideviews were not mandated in '71. Poke around online- I'm sure the federal guideline is out there somewhere...

Brian nailed it for me, especially: nissan, vw, ferrari, mazda, Ford/Merc, and the 300. "G6" doesn't bother me much because it's the only one at Pontiac; if the entire lineup was a G-something my head would probably explode.

Sure looks like a real solid example. Seller didn't even clean it up (whitewalls, dash chrome, etc), so a good day's detail work would punch it up a notch. I can't stop looking at those giant aftermarket amber lights, tho- they'd have to go if it was mine. Has Triple Turibne trans- real good unit. '59s ride like a dream. It does take a bit of getting used to as far as how low you sit in it them tho (they still have flat front floors in '59). Worth more than $3K for an A/C-equipped 225 4-dr hardtop.

Can do it all, footings (excavation) to roof, demo, electrical, plumbing, siding, windows & doors, hardwood floors, appliance & cabinet installations... you name it.

That it is: it isn't a '94 interior because that's the year the F-150 got the SRS steering wheel. Interior is 100% 1993 production. Exterior is barfalicious. I have no problem with the interior; I had better not: I stare at it every day (with the SRS wheel): '94 F-150. Like Croc said: very functional, very good ergonomics, no complaints whatsoever. Well... one: the rearview was mounted pretty low. When it got knocked & demounted, I was able to remount it as high as possible, increasing my field of vision beneath it greatly.

Associated Press reported in a piece last weekend that the '06 Escalade has the industry's first satellite TV system. It's KVH TracVision, dealer installed. 'Antenna' is a 3-foot wide, 5-in tall disc fitted on the vehicle's roof. Article also stated GM was considerig pre-wiring all their SUVs for satellite TV in '07.
