GM Looking To Get Rid Of The Job Bank?
Actually, didn't Wagoneer take about a 50% paycut?

'GM's Collapsing Ladder'
Part of the problem is also GM's fault. Back in the 50s and 60s the divisions had a smaller number of models, but more variations in each model. In the 80s the divisions started having one of everything with very little variation in the model line. In the 80s every division got a J-body. Every division got an A-body <except Cadillac>. Every division got a W-body. Every division got an H-body <execpt Chevy>. Every division got B-body. It brought the divisions down on top of each other. Why buy a 98 when for a few bucks more <or even less in some years> you could get an even more posh Park Ave/Electra? Why spend all that dough on a Park Ave, when for just a few dollar more car payment you could get a Deville? The ladder isn't collapsing today. It collapsed somewhere around 1981. GM is trying to rebuild it today. The ladder looks different now. Instead of the rungs being social class or financial indicators, they are more personality indicators in picking which kind of car you want. Today the ladder looks more like this: Sport/Lux - Cadillac Lux - Buick Sport - Pontiac "Euro" - Saab/Saturn Basic Transport - Chevy

Obsure Engine
Getting sooooo much closer. You are correct that the 5th camshaft is for the oil pump. This is definately a car engine. The 5th camshaft had cams on it in previous variations of this block, but in that configuration, the 5th camshaft wasn't the fifth, it was the first.

Should Pontiac make a 4-cylinder G6 Coupe?
Sure there should.... They have 4-cylinder Accord coupes, Solaras, Stratus coupes, Sebring coupes.

The Speedo Quiz Thread...
#5 looks very mid-60s Buicky..... I don't know why it is "high-tech" unless it was something that was high tech in the 60s and now passe' to me today. Chemo-luminescent maybe? #6 looks like it has clear plastic behind the cluster and probably uses some sort of sunlight/mirror setup.... which of course is quite usefull at night.

Obsure Engine
not even close.... The engine I'm refering to is a DOHC engine..... yet has 5 camshafts.... one of which no longer has any cams on it.
-
Obsure Engine
Oh come on now. Does the 3800 have 5 camshafts.... or even more then one? Think about it.... why would a car have more then one cam shaft?
-
Obsure Engine
No, much more "everyman" then that. It's a car engine. The cams on the 5th camshaft aren't there anymore. This engine was a major evolution on a previous engine design.

Obsure Engine
There is an engine out there with 5 camshafts. It is a somewhat common engine, two or three may have even passed you on the road today. Sadly, it has mostly been ignored even though it produces large amounts of power compaired to other engines of this vintage. The 5th camshaft is somewhat vestigial and no longer serves it's original purpose, yet is still vital for the operation of the engine. What engine am I refering to? What is the purpose of the 5th camshaft?

2006 Cadillac DTS
Just give the man a 3-series to shut him up. There are cars out there with a smoother ride then a DTS? Eh... Town Car maybe, Lucerne close... but none of those European cars are going to do it. If a shopper is looking in the DTS class, the IS 350 is an economy car. This is where one must keep perspective. The only Lexus the DTS competes with is the LS, the rest are too small. I can't imagine anyone complaining about the Northstar in this application. It's quiet and subdued around town, yet roars to life and hustles you down the road when you smash your right loafer into the carpet. Plenty of cars make more then 291hp at $53k. NONE of them come with the rest of the package that the DTS has in size and comfort.

New BMW M Coupe
eh, it still needs Rhinoplasty

ATLAS ENGINES
GM did themselves a diservice by not designing these engines to be "slant 6s" like BMWs are.... or at least by making a slant six varient.

3.9L detuned... again??
Yes and the Sebring comes base with a 150hp I4 The solara comes base with a 157hp I4

GMNA to Undergo Major Capacity Reduction
For him.... size matters.... and the FiveHundred is probably the largest mid-sizer out there. edit: the Five Hundred is only 3 inches longer then a Taurus's 197inches. The Crown Victoria is a full foot longer.
-
GMNA to Undergo Major Capacity Reduction
I think what he is trying to say is that the Fivehundred is a full size car, in a midsize body with a midsize price. For some people it will be too big. Some people it will be too small. Some people it will be just right. Why would someone buy a Luscerne over an Avalon? Because they think <like me> that the new Avalon is hideous.. or they maybe they want a V8... or maybe Buick gave them a special offer if they traded in their LeSabre. I'm a technoweeny and I still don't care that neither my CTS nor the Lucerne have bluetooth.

3.9L detuned... again??
The G6 Convertible still has the most power of this segment + plus a retractible hardtop. G6 227hp > Camry Solara 210hp > Sebring 200hp

Can Chrysler keep its mojo?
Chrysler should do a production version of this: based off the SL platform.
