This is part of VW's strategy to become the world's largest automaker by 2018; by doing the same thing GM did - sell a lot of SUVs. This is a copy/paste of the GM T360 Trailblazer/Envoy/Bravada/Rainier/Ascender/9-7x platform. At a higher-end of the market, VW would sell off of the PL71 platform that makes the Touareg/Cayenne/Q7/Urus/Bentley EXP 9 F The luxury market is becoming more dynamic. The R&D is complete. Whether the marketing and sales strategy is fully realized is another story.

High-end racing and luxury brands go hand-in-hand these days. Infiniti is part of the Red Bull F1 racing team. Ferrari, of course, is the pinnacle of such endeavors. Cadillac does participate in some form of racing in the SCCA and Pirelli World Challenge. But Cadillac should make it a long-term goal to perform at the highest level of racing in the global economy to show it truly is the Standard of the World. The deal was made to have a Ferrari engine power the US F1 team for the 2016 season. Perhaps a future replacement of a Cadillac engine would be the best move to make the brand a true standout from anything else GM would do.

You say that a Chevy is just as good as a BMW, Audi, and Mercedes - rightfully so. What is the reason then for Cadillac to be an American luxury brand? This is the same problem that Lincoln has when platform sharing with Ford. We all want Cadillac (and Lincoln) to succeed. But coming right off the Bankruptcy, Cadillac is still tied to all other brands and platforms. The long-term plan seems half-baked at this point and vague names like CT6 do not instill a vote of confidence among the potential buying public. I really hope that the new (and autonomous platform) CTS-V will have what it takes to go against super luxury brands like BMW as well as up-and-coming cars like the Charger Hellcat. But that drivetrain is from the ZO6 (Thank you, Corvette). What does Cadillac have in the pipeline to be an exclusive Cadillac power plant that will say "CADILLLAC" and not "GM"? Back in the day, the GM A-Bodies had the Chevelle SS/GTO/442/Skylark GS to fight over the middle market. But it was the Eldorado that said "luxury" for GM. Those who couldn't quite make that move would get a Riviera or Tornado. This is the type of clout that GM as a whole needs to get back in the car market which is extremely difficult in the global age.

Regardless if Johan was in charge or not, Cadillac still faces the same dilemma; How can you be an exclusive luxury vehicle brand with the same mechanical underpinnings of a Chevrolet? What is old is new again (separate platforms & engines) but what will not change is the copy/paste marketing and naming conventions. I am more concerned over the narrative of Cadillac and how it will fit as a true luxury brand. So far, the design of the new cars are awesome. The future drivetrains are still a mystery. But the names; please think of a better heritage for what the impact of these cars will be.

I hope a single cab version is in the works. Also, they can bring back the Syclone with the turbo 3.6L that is found in the Cadillac V-Sport.

Maserati sales were up 315.6% for the month of July. Just wait until the Alfieri hits the market. I want the Viper around for the long-term. But between government regulations and corporate bean counting, it will be a challenge to keep it on the market.

The Viper needs to stay relevant or it will eventually be retired. Since it is part of Fiat, that means that it needs to justify its niche among Maserati and Ferrari. Since it goes head-to-head with the Corvette, it needs to compete with the ZO6. A Supercharged V-10 is a good quick-fix. But let us see if there is a long-term plan for the Viper.

The new badge is supposed to be three dimensional. However, it won't stand out properly unless the grille has more chrome surrounding it.

I think this also demonstrates a good-faith effort to own problem cars that GM would technically not be liable for after the bankruptcy. These recalls do two things; 1) Maintains a positive reputation for the company regarding shareholders and future sales and 2) a buffer from the courts to allow any class-action lawsuits that are mainly being motivated by greedy trial attorneys.

I think The Onion needs to do an "article" with the headline, "GM Recalls Every Car and Truck ever manufactured". This is officially out of control.

The only possibility of Cadillac being "exclusive" in its product offering that I can see now is if they put that 4.5L V8 into production in addition to the 3.6L V6 TT. Everything else is being shared by the other brands. The CTS-V will get the Z-O6 powertrain and all of the other engines can be found in other GM cars. I still miss the Northstar engine.

The development of any Cadillac is now tied to any other GM platform development. If you can't make the business case for a 3-row luxury crossover for Cadillac as part of a long-term platform marketing strategy, then it will not be built. As the press release states, "the proposed Cadillac crossover would compete too closely with the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia." Unless GM wants to re-badge the old Saturn Outlook as a Cadillac, but I doubt that will happen. Fiat-Chrysler is doing the same thing with integrating its platforms for cars to be sold on both sides of the Atlantic. The margins are too high to take the "Escalade" name off the current SUV platform. GM makes a lot of money from the Tahoe/Denali/Escalade sales and simply "transferring" the name to a different platform is too risky. That would also go against the current marketing campaign with David Bowie's "Fame" in the commercial showing that you are driving the ultimate symbol of luxury and not simply an up-level family hauler.

Check out this interview from last October where Bob Lutz says that the new ATS was really supposed to be the next-gen G6 if Pontiac had not been eliminated. http://www.autoblog.com/2013/10/29/lutz-says-washington-killed-pontiac-next-g6-was-to-be-ats-deriv/ The plan was to REALLY make Pontiac a true driving excitement brand with an all high-performance and rear wheel drive only line-up.
