Letter to GM from Edmonds.com president
GM marine For more than 40 years, GM has been a leader in marine engines. Its first official entry into the marine market was in 1958 with a 284-cid, 185-hp Chevrolet engine. In 1960, a group was formed within GM to fully support marine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Today, GM Powertrain supplies a wide array of engines to several marine OEMs <snip>

Saturn Astra to Launch in Late-07
I wonder if the XE will have the 2.2 l. engine, and the XR will sport the 2.4 L. engine instead? Since a Cobalt SS with the 2.4 has a list of 18K, I assume your $20,000 should be possible. Just guessing.

Saturn Astra to Launch in Late-07
[ASTRA} "Be offered in XE (five-door) and XR (three-door and five-door) trim levels, and will bring new levels of style, performance, safety and efficiency to the small car segment in North America" information from here but not too much more

Letter to GM from Edmonds.com president
While this may bogus, it may not be. I remember a few years ago when Honda changed presidents there was an article in the media where it was reported that he commented that GM was the class of American vehicles. So there is a history of this sort of thing.

Chicago Debuts
Since this is the first year that the Los Angeles Auto Show preceded the Detroit show by more than a couple of days, perhaps other events were "pulled forward"?

Toyota’s ultra-low-cost car threatens ‘big three’
I think it was Plymouth that was working on this some years ago (post neon perhaps?) The color was to be included in the plastic exterior panels, no sheen, symmetrical doors and fenders so left and right would be interchangeable, etc. Also isn't there a whole auto industry in South Africa based on old tooling for previous generation Peugeot's and other vehicles?

click here for just a little more <snip> In addition to the previously documented unveiling of the 2008 Astra – Saturn's ION small car replacement – the company will also reportedly take the wraps off its next generation VUE Red Line model. <snip> The '08 VUE Green Line hybrid is also expected to make an appearance.

Market Watch! GM's Incentives Drop - Japan's Shoot Up
It will if the cars are troublesome and don't provide good value. If, however, the cars hold up well ... then what?

Market Watch! GM's Incentives Drop - Japan's Shoot Up
Too bad that whole take over thing didn't work out so save GM. (sarcasm)

Is the UAW At Fault for Detroit's Woes?
It is not really a fact, but the opinion of the article's author; an author who chooses not to address the fact that Toyota produces better quality cars at its UAW plant than it's non union plant. Likewise the author chooses not to discuss GM's lack of profitability at its Springhill plant where the union "bottleneck" rules were only recently implemented.

Asian Invasion on the Capitol
Just today I read that Michigan was giving Ford big bucks to keep 8 factories open. In return Ford was investing even bigger bucks for retooling.

Asian Invasion on the Capitol
I think that the biggest advantage Toyota and Honda have for the vehicles they produce in this country is that there work force is younger and healthier. That of course is changing as their employees age and the domestics "retire" their older employees through buyouts. Will it happen fast enough to save the home team? I think so, but how the hell would I really know.

CONCEPT: Chevrolet Volt
Don't get me started on fuel cells -- I just don't get it. Of course one of the advantages of the Volta is that it would be adaptable to fuel cells if I am proved wrong AGAIN. :AH-HA_wink:

Thanks! Sometimes politicans look for too big an answer. We can nibble away at some of these problems.

CONCEPT: Chevrolet Volt
This is a concept that I believe very strongly in. It seems to me some people don't have the funds or room for multiple vehicles, but many more do. Two issues that hold us back unnecessarily are insurance and registration fees. The latter is easily addressed by government. You pay your registration fee for the least efficient vehicle, the rest are free. If a family had two licensed drivers, then registration fees would be charged for the first two vehicles and the rest would be free. If the insurance companies want to continue to do business (many states require liability insurance) then they need to go along to get along. I can only drive one car at a time! Why should I have to pay liability insurance on the unused vehicle?

CONCEPT: Chevrolet Volt
I assume that the car will have GM's excellent oil life monitor and that the Onstar feature will email you and let you know how much oil life remains. Gas stabilizer would help for the gas tank issue although I assume proper maintenance would suggest running the internal combustion engine on occasion to "oil" the cylinder surfaces. The owners manual on this car should be a hoot to read. As fetching as the design of this car, the real excitement is that back end of the propulsion system could be what ever technology develops to be the best -- be it bio diesel, hydrogen, plug in, etc. and the front end of the propulsion system is already developed and GM is ready.

Prepare for the Worst-Expect the Worst
I think the answer to non-union GM workers also taking a cut is that this has already happened - big time.

CONCEPT: Chevrolet Volt
msnbc article This article adds no information to the above, but it is the general media and it is positive toward GM's image. Many of us always bitch about the rotten deal the media gives GM. There is a rating system for these articles. Rate it high and more people will see it. Go do it. Find the corresponding article at Yahoo and rate that up too. It's not a lot, but its something to do to help.
