  1. I have to agree. I associate "professional grade" (in general) with excellent build quality, durability, good ergonomics, customer support. Some of the SUVs (CUVs) have been developed to be specialized to particular uses that are not off-road worthy, and that's fine. Is it fair to be upset at a company that supposedly builds professional grade saws just because their new tile saw model does a lousy job of cutting wood?

  3. I don't mind the Genesis coupe, but I'd take the Mustang or Camaro over it. What I'm not as sure about is which I'd prefer, Camaro or Mustang.
  4. I agree. To some degree electric cars have an automatic diversification of fuels, as there are so many ways to make electricity. Unfortunately, there are 2 problems: the fact that pure electric vehicles still don't make good sense for primary vehicles, and there is still a risk that electric companies would become too powerful and gouge.

  8. The Outback not only has better ground clearance than the GMC, it has better than the Skoda as well. The Skoda strikes me as hardly an offroad beast. The only thing that makes it stand out in offroad ability above the terrain that I'm seeing is the locking diffs.
  9. The reason for a 40 mile range is so that many commuters could have all-electric commuting, which makes the ICE economy irrelevant. It would be interesting to see how the ICE economy would compare between a 40 mile range and a lighter 20 mile range Volt, though. I'd suspect that unless battery tech advances significantly, adding more electric range would have severe diminishing return, unless the ICE drivetrain is dropped altogether and they go for an all-electric setup.
  10. The Terrain is only 6mm closer to the ground. For perspective, a pencil is about 7mm thick. Locking diffs would be sweet, though. I think most Terrains are going to people who would much rather the money they're spending be going into creature comforts than off-road capabilities, but it would be nice if they had a model that aimed more at some off-road abilities.
  11. dunno if it's a photoshop or just someone goofing around by tossing a large engine on a car they don't care about for a funny picture, but it's not a functioning setup. Looks a tad small to be a CAT 3500, but it's close.
  12. u-pull-it yards are awesome. Unfortunately I have to drive pretty far to get to one that's decent sized. There's a reasonably sized place near here that lets you pull your own parts though.
  13. I just wish more young, intelligent people would have problems and document them. Every old person report hurts Toyota, but also deserves a major seed of doubt about whether it was actually the car's fault. I still enjoy watching Toyota get kicked while they're down, though.
  14. Modernized Saturn S-Series, duh. Keep: - low weight (2500lb or under) - polymer panels - fuel efficient (at least 35mpg highway, should be able to do better than 40mpg highway with drivetrain updates and low weight) - mechanically simple (no hybrid or other convoluted system) - manual option - sedan, wagon - two drivetrain options: one focused on mpg, other on very peppy performance while still very good mpg - good suspension design Update: - interior/exterior design/quality - drivetrain update (DI, VVT) - quad coupe

  16. My in-laws have a 3.8L Lucerne. They loaned it to us this past december a few times for running around doing christmas shopping. Very nice car, especially if you have a relaxed driving style (though it has enough guts to giddy-up when needed, just saying it's certainly not going to please a sports car enthusiast). We also rode in the back seat for about 2.5hrs from the airport, and it was very comfortable. I'd pick up an '09 Lucerne for ~$19k over a malibu any day of the week. The only complaint my in-laws have had about the car is the fuel economy. While it's not bad, they had a Park Avenue (also 3.8L) before the Lucerne, and the Lucerne consistantly gets 2-3mpg less than the Park Avenue did.

  18. Again, this is where it would be nice if GM could manage some of the brands as brands instead of divisions. Offer up one or two Hummer models when the market wants them and just sell them at a Chevy or GMC dealer. Market dries up, kill 'em off, but without any of the major expense that comes with closing a division. Few years later demand is back? Bring them back. Same for Olds, Saturn, Pontiac, etc, etc. Anyway, I'd rather Hummer be dead than Chinese.

  20. Wow. So why is Toyota doing recalls in other countries? And how did the government convince people to die in their Toyotas?
  21. So Chrysler is paying for a new logo design for the school. How about if they let the school simply phase out the old logo that's in question? Instead of this appearing to be a "here comes big bad Chrysler to stick it to the school", it instead becomes a partnership to give them a unique but still cool ram logo. Chrysler donates some minimal money to have old logos painted over & the new logo put in it's place. For the more expensive things like the gym floor, set an agreement that when the floor needs worked over down the road, that at that time they replace the old logo with the new. But, it's too late to avoid the negative PR, to change to the above plan now would just be a lame givein to public pressure. Might still be a little better, but nowhere near as good as if they'd done it from the start.
